  1. The ukulele was broken. It had strings, but the sound it made was not what I wanted to hear. At least not at the moment I strummed it. I used my fingers to tighten down different cords along the neck but they all sounded weak.

  3. It was badly broken- shattered. The wood had splintered like broken bone, the strings lay like dead things, coiled like they had curled up to die. He couldn’t take his eyes off of it, as if he was willing time to reverse, willing it to reassemble itself.

  5. The ukulele blues. Here I am, on a Hawaiian island, missing European and East Coast U.S. culture. The ukulele feels like a kid’s instrument and if they’re your kid, you feel so proud of them, but if they’re not your kid, you’re bored to death. Ditto, the hula. Again, if they’re your kid, up there on stage or on the grass or in the school auditorium, then your heart is in your mouth with love for them, but if they’re not your kid, it’s just a bunch of slow motion waving arms and moving hips, and you’re bored out of your mind. The beach is a different story. Most of the time, no one brings a ukulele or practices the hula.

  8. Ukulele music is what she is drawn to since it is a part of her heritage of her Hawaiian ancestors. She remembers the times sitting around the fire at night with her family and friends at their home on the island of Oahu: gathering to eat, fellowship and sing while playing the ukulele; always with much laughter and love to go around for everyone…it is a Hawaiian tradition that still holds near and dear to her heart.

  10. Ukulele’s are like miniature guitars, except they aren’t actually as good , because they have less strings and they always sound sort of squeaky. Real guitars make actual noises, not squeaky miniature twangs that sound like an infant’s toy

  16. What is a Ukulele you might ask it is
a small four-stringed guitar of Hawaiian origin.
    It is also a

member of the lute family of instruments. It generally employs four nylon or gut strings or four courses of strings. Some strings may be paired in courses, giving the instrument a total of six or eight strings.

  18. The strings popped off, one after another. How could ukulele break? I just bought it. I thought it would be a fun hobby and a great souvenir from the island. The strings now looked like hard spaghetti noodles and I was left with this small wooden toy with a hole in the middle. I did not know how to fix the strings let alone where to buy new strings. My dream of becoming a professional player seem to break in to like the strings popping off the wooden box.

  34. Is that Little Savannah I see, sitting on her grandmother’s front porch, playing her purple ukelele while her brother sells cold pink lemonade? Is she wearing dandelions in her black hair again – little yellow heads popping out of a inky lake, weedy whimsies ready to say hello?

How much is that lemonade your brother’s selling, Savannah? ‘Cause I’ve got a dry throat and an aching belly, and I could use something sweet before the bitterness settles in again.
