  2. my hair swept back. it was one of those summer mornings, by the beach, you know. you just woke up, it’s early enough for it not to be too hot, and the colors are just filtered to perfection. and the smell of salt. it only happens in summer. only then your hair swept back makes sense.

  4. Once Ted had swept the kitchen floor, he started doing the dishes. The angry grunt from the next room made him stop suddenly and run into the laundry room. He swapped the clothing from the dryer to the basket, the washer to the dryer, and the hamper to the washer. Then he ran back the kitchen table to write out the checks for the bills and then started to fold the laundry, all the time panicking that the dishes were not finished.

    “Fold more quietly!” Agnes’ voice shrieked from the last room. From the sound of the bull whip cracking, he could tell she had put down the box of bon-bons.

    “That’s it, I’ve had enough!” the yelled, “…As soon as I’m finished with my evening waterboarding, I’m going bowling!”

  14. I swept the tears away, yet as soon as I did more streamed down my face. Black tears packed with mascara covered my hands and cheeks and burned my eyes, but I could not stop. Sobs came spilling out my lips and shook my entire frame. I managed to take a deep drag of my third cigarette and exhaled. Cigarettes always help why isn’t it helping why can’t I stop. I crouched at my back door in the foggy night and weeped. Why are you gone.

  18. i swept the bird away today on the ground by the hay. i didn’t know why it was there or what i was supposed to do with it but it looked like a depressing scene to be a part of. what was i supposed to do with the bird that i just swept away? but what is a life if we’re not just all to be swept away.

  24. I swept everything under the rug, all the time. every problem that I ever ran into i just kept ignoring, i never dealt with it all. Maybe its just because I couldnt do it alone. I tried so hard, and i put on a good front for a little while. But soon I cracked under the pressure, I mean. Even Atlas took a rest when Hercules held the world for him. Right?

  26. Have you ever seen the cover of the Van Morrison album that has “Stranded” on it? It’s a beautiful picture of a couple waltzing under a full moon. The woman looks completely swept off of her feet. It touches me every time–as does the song.

The next day she couldn’t stop thinking about it as she swept the petals off the floor. The flowers he’d brought her sat in a special vase on the counter.
