  27. Marcel wanted to make a statement as he stood before his 8-foot square canvas. His passion. His hopes, his dreams. Forty-five years in galleries, galas, fine arts receptions, hanging out with rock stars and millionnaires. He wanted to express his secret longings, desires, unfulfilled dreams. He took a long gulp of his double-espresso, put on his playlist of 1970s punk rock classics mixed with Schubert, Mendelssohn, Rossini and Manilow, then dipped his fists into buckets of paint and began his work.

9 frenzied hours later, he walked away, satisfied, from a large-scale self-portrait of himself, sitting in a cubicle, eerily glowing by the radiance of a desktop computer, with an empty bag of Cheetos in his lap.

Why can’t you just ask me to say what I feel about the situation. Not “Can you make a statement” Then again I guess there is different circumstances for different situations.

  39. Statement. It’s clear and simple. Or maybe it’s complex. Statements. Right now I’m thinking of a horrible one. One that scares me. I am afraid. This whole thing scares me and it’s just one statement. How can it do this? Yet at the same time how can just one statement make us happy?

  40. Statement. I don’t even know what to write. Ironically enough, because writing is making a statement. Here it goes. Art is a statement. A statement can be art. In most ways. When anything gives a statement, yells a voice, tells a story, it becomes art. I don’t care if it’s written on paper, on a school wall, or on the inside of your lover’s heart.
