Startled is how I feel when I am caught doing something that quite isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing. Startled is how I feel when I am woken up from a deep slumber without much warning. Startled is what I am when the alarm clock goes off, or when the baby cries, or when the cat knocks something off. Startled is not fun.
i was startled when I found out that my mother had left my father. Not upset just startled. I guess I hadn’t really seen it coming though I should have. Lord knows there were more than enough signs there. I should have recognized.
