  11. When I was a lad, a sigh would mean the longest of awkward silences running behind a thinly veiled brick wall of contempt. My step-mother never gave a second thought to the new children, her own were precious enough and were never to come before the younger more significant of the births. I realize that she didn’t have to actually push me or my siblings out of her nethers and she is likely unimpressed that my mother’s snatch didn’t have the same fangs and acid for me to escape and prove my worthiness at life. It just seems excessive to me.

  29. Sighing. It’s kind of an indication that you’re exasperated, or disappointed, or just plain listless. Why do we do it? It’s just a loud exhale, why does it have such connotations? Or maybe it means even more – perhaps it has some sort of psychic root in our behaviour, something that’s instinctual as a method of conveying some manner of emotion such as annoyance or disbelief. I just know that I do it a lot at work.
