  4. Start! Damn you, start! I hit the gas, but nothing happened. Then I realized. I had to shift it out of park first. Grabbing the clutch, I swiftly did so and ripped out of the parking lot, leaving black, hot rubber lying on the pavement behind me.

  5. wiltern wilting
    our dreams
    into the night
    I would not ask
    for the daggers
    the simplicity
    of release
    I felt the cold
    in your night
    this was the rest
    we measured
    the rest we
    failed to take
    I was near joy
    you were near me
    the asking was not
    favored, flavored
    by myrrh our fallen
    treasure
    cast in night’s
    pall, bleakness
    castaway
    castles dreamt darkly
    wisdom lost
    fearfully
    seven times
    the matter
    the cherubim
    of failure
    i will not follow
    twas green we
    left
    blue we filled
    black we labored
    quietest night
    civil
    the twilight’s exhaust
    to be
    to see
    walk that line
    fear that sensitivity
    you will have
    the voice
    the mother’s voice
    you’ll know the water
    the depth of the well
    we will pass
    the darkest ways
    consecrating loss
    as the gods
    their yearning.

  10. He shifted out of the parking lot and into the street. It was pretty cloudy that night, but it was always cloudy there, polluted air from the factory always made the surroundings a little darker… or perhaps it was his view. He wasn’t sure. But he had to get to the country

  11. love shifts. it is not a steady thing. from one moment of utter bliss right into one moment of heartwrenching misery, love is a collection of emotions. it is never still, never calm, never just one thing. i can’t say i love you without at least hating you for an hour.

  17. I dont enjoy the shift key on a keyboard because you ahve to hold it down to use it. Why cant you press the shift key, have the next letter you type be capital, go back to lowercase, and be done? No big deal!

  18. Shift – a change from one state to another. What needs to be shifted in your life? Or what has shifted that should have stayed the same. Shift often feels right but can be so wrong. Do you need to shift? Or to stop the shift? Whichever can be the right thing. You need to decide which you need.

  19. I work the early shift. I see him everyday at the coffee shop and look away when hes sees me. Those rosy cheeks from the cold drive me crazy. I think one day I will get up the nerve, but for now I choose to dream of those cheeks, and who knows what else….

  22. when he steals her away, all he worries about are the legal repercussions. people will be looking for her (the family in particular) when they finally find her parents dumped in the ditch, and he panics at the thought of losing her– losing the last living remnant of her mother.

she shifts on the sheets of the hotel bed, squirming and whining for a moment before drifting off again. the only consolation offered to him is, considering her age, it’ll be easier to hide her identity until he forges her papers.
