  1. whether someone or something (an action?) is respectable or not I think should be in the eye-of-the-beholder as it were… the word conjures up images of establishment and older persons- really it shouldn’t though. It would be nice if one felt the word could be more readily applied to a broader range of people- if whatever virtue is implied by ‘respectability’ was more readily seen in less obvious places… but then this is just me thinking aloud and there’s probably something circular in here somewhere!

  2. When ones pretends to be respectable it is much easier to get ahead in the predatory capitalists system. To be truly respectable, one must care with heart.

by Brandi Williams Palmer on 01.08.2011
  3. I’ve already “Oneworded” this word before… but that was when I was testing out this website. now I am signed up for it!! It’s fun, I think you would know. But anyways, I don’t think that many people are respectable. Unless you are Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy is extremely respectable.

    by Elessar on 01.08.2011
  4. A respectable man is hard to come by… perhaps a respectable woman even harder. But why is that? What has changed about our society so much that a person no longer even respects himself or herself? We are a people who base their worth solely on material possessions, looks, and other meaningless basis of judgment. “Respectable” therefore no longer has the meaning it once did.

    by Meg on 01.08.2011
  5. Respectable. I wish I was respectable. I am not. I am but one person of many who has lost their own self respect and with it, their ability to be respectable. I have failed at life in the sense that I have not succeeded in maintaining one of the very few things that we, as humans, are allowed to maintain strictly by our own willpower. It is respect that we lose over time when we do nothing, and respect that is so hard to regain. Respectable? Pfft. What a joke.

    by Kyle on 01.08.2011

    by Linda Berryman on 01.08.2011
  7. The man was so respectable because his mother was not. I don’t even know how that makes sense, but it does. It does because it’s true. did you alsop know that fish are respectable because some of them eat each together? Well, that was a lie. That makes them… disrespectable… Is that a word? I dont think it is… maybe… But actually that whole thing was a lie. That man wasn’t respectable at all for that reason.

    by Elessar on 01.08.2011
  8. I don’t want to be.
The common misconception is that I’m incapable, but that really isn’t so.
I just don’t want to be.
And frankly, I don’t find anything wrong with that. Can you be respectable to everyone you meet? I didn’t think so. That black guy who just shoved past you carrying your wallet that you didn’t even notice he stole from you, who’s cursing straight at you now. Yeah. You gonna be respectable to him? Tough luck, sucker.

    by Shiyang on 01.08.2011
  9. This is something you should be towards any one you meet. You give and you will receive. There is nothing wrong with having or being this. This will make you a better person and make this a better world.

I’m the guy you bring over to meet your ex-boyfriend when you need someone to break his kneecaps. I’m the guy you introduce your least favorite co-worker to when you want to make sure she doesn’t make it to work on time. No. I’m anything but respectable. But I do have standards.

    that old gentleman
    by the fireside
    enunciates
whiskey in hand and leather bound books
    accent dripping off the walls,
    monocle? bifocals?
    pocket-watch chain.
diplomas on wall degrees in hand.
    i am not respectable.

    by Karen on 01.08.2011

I wish I was nicer to people that I don’t like. I wish I didn’t use the word I so often and that I could focus on other people. I wish people took me more seriously as a person.

    by Kelsey on 01.08.2011
  19. I wish I was respectable. I used to be. But I hid everything. I wish my family was respectable. But they lie. To me, to everyone. I wish my friends were respectable. But they lie too. They are fake. In this world, no one really is respectable.

    by Jordan on 01.08.2011
  20. I’m not respectable. I don’t care, either.
If I cared, I don’t think I’d be sitting here, without a college education, gripping a Marlboro tightly between my index and middle fingers.
I’d shut my mouth when my thoughts were inappropriate.
I’d sell the band shirts I’ve had since I was 15 for suits; dry cleaner’s only.
But that’s only if I cared. And caring is an emotion that I simply do not have.

    by Emma on 01.08.2011

    by Abby on 01.08.2011
  23. If I were respectable, then that would be the best thing of all. I would be loved by my family and friends, and wouldn’t feel so bad when my dad would call and tell me how much he wishes I would do more. I hate the feeling of not being good enough for them.

by Laura Ann Castillo on 01.08.2011
  24. It’s hard to feel respectable with all this blood and guts purging out of chest through my shirt. Ok, so it’s invisible. Well alright I’m the only one who can see it, but it doesn’t mean it’s not real to me. I’m not delusional, just in a little, ok a lot, of pain… And because of that some days I don’t feel respectable.

  25. not in my school
    we fight
    we yell
    i’m scared, you know
    im alone.
    there is none
    feel free
    to explain what this means
    to everyone
    we don’t know
    we wont ever
    not in this life
    never
    tell me
oh please do, we all should know how to be respectable.
we should, we really should, but we don’t
    we can’t eat lunch

    like looking up,
    as a child looking up
    Up to higher levels

Something like grown ups but not quite.

  36. Now there are actually two words, here–respect and able. It’s really a self defining word as in one is able to repect said object. To some this is an old fashioned word, which they seem to think is redundant. I happen to think its cautious. That is all I can think of. :)

    by J on 01.08.2011
  37. I have already written about this word, but I suppose that I can do it again. Respectable implies respect. respect implies that there is something about you worth looking up to. Which means that some part of you needs to be worthwhile. I find that oftentimes, conveying an appearance of respectability is more a lie than any true value you hold.

    by Katelyn on 01.08.2011
