  1. relatives are not always friendly or good. Sometimes friends are better. Relatives create a lot of complexities. Too many expectations. But people still give them too much importance. Sometimes giving them preference over friends.

  2. I don’t know you. You are not related to me. I see nothing of myself in you. The word father does not apply to you. I do not pretend to know you, to love you, to want you as the man who was responsible for me. I want you gone, you are not related to me.

  3. I think of my relatives dearly. Recently ive been contemplating suicide, mostly my preventative cause is their worry and distress. I am appauled with my immediate family however, and will never love them as they claim to “love” me.

    by Will on 01.27.2011

  7. Relatives are often the family we never wanted. They’re the ones who sit at the dinner table with us on Christmas and Easter and blab and blab about all the unimportant things in their lives. And we only listen because they’re our relatives. And deep down we really love them.

  11. My relatives are something else. A little while ago I wouldn’t have claimed most of my family. We weren’t really that close and I felt as though my friends had a bigger bearing on my life. As of recent, though, my family has been amazing! We have gotten very close and they have all been a huge blessing in my life!

  12. Relative. n. a person connected by blood or marriage. Relatives are people who help you through times of hardship. They are always there for you to lean on and they cant ditch you, because they’re family. Some people have alot of relatives and some dont have many. I really fail at this one word thing because I AM A SLOW TYPER AND IM RUNNING OUT OF TIME AND MS GREEN IS GUNNA KILL ME FOR TYPING THIS AHHHHH.

    by Nicole on 01.26.2011
  13. When one thinks relatives, one thinks those related by blood. Not so for this poor girl. For her, that family was barely hanging together by a thin, taut thread. No, her true relatives, her true relations, were with friends who didn’t completely desert her after the biggest mistake of her life.

It was funny how the simple words of forgiveness and the line “I hate how they look at you” seems to make even just a little bit of the world seem right again. Those who held worry for her, who kept her in their thoughts out of concern, they were her true relatives.

And the Fae had never been happier for them.

  14. relatives are people you should be able to rely on no matter the situation. you may not always agree with them or like hanging out with them, but they are the people you should be able to trust.

  15. are really, interesting. I don’t really have any around me besides immediate family. My mom broke up with her sister a few years back so even my closest cousins (proximity-wise and blood wise) are no longer really associated with me. Its quite sad and that is something i regret. since Rene and i have began driving we have made an effort to fix the break but you know how it goes.

  16. I think I have relatives in so many distance countries that I wouldn’t be able to count them on one hand. My relatives like some pretty strange things. Meditation, natural medicine, vegetables. You know, good stuff.

  21. Family. You like them, you don’t, who knows, really. Aunts with weird stories, uncles with exceedingly large wine collections, and grandmothers with skein after skein of yarn.

    by Ellen on 01.26.2011
  22. relatives are kind of awkward. you never really RELATE to them unless your whole family is ridiculously close in attributes. They almost seem like strangers.

    by Danni on 01.26.2011
  23. My relatives are truly wonderful people. Everytime I see them I am reminded of how lucky I am to have such a great family, and tell myself to spend more time with them because I know many are nearing the ends of their lovely lifes. It’s a shame I keep putting it off because I know one day I am going to look back and regret not being as close to them as I would like to have been. But alas, that is life. I love you Grandma and Grandpa, I am sorry for my distance.

  24. relatives played a large role in the last century and continue to carry importance now. in the advent of world war, relatives birthed theories in time-space, psychology, and social consciousness, causing us to re-examine our existence as sentient beings.

  25. My relatives don’t really get along. I haven’t talked to my Dad’s side in about a decade. Thanks to a shitty can of worms that was recently opened up, I haven’t talked to my mom’s side either. Exception being my Uncle Tommy and my deceased grandma who I visit at the graveyard once a month. Sadness right there.

  26. I already did this word.
I already said all I had to say, but it was before I created an account and so it is floating out there like it has no relation to me or my mind or this name which represents me.

  27. I have no relatives. I do but they are distant. They are strangers. I live in a family of strangers. I have more in common with a man who asks me for a lighter than I do my flesh and blood family that send me Christmas Cards.

  28. We stand silently considering the space between us. As if we can will a connection by focusing hard enough on what we are lacking.

  29. Those people you see over the holidays or on well planned excursions to some remote place with a hotel big enough to accommodate you all while you spend a week being loving and open and pretending you really know each other. And if you really do, you spend a week telling stories and comparing recipes.

  30. She stared at the screen. Her relatives email was sat there, unpoened. Cautiously, she opened it to display an incredibly colourful invitation to a birthday party.

  31. relatives make me crazy. they are thick headed backwards narrow minded people. they eat constantly. i feel bad for thinking this way, because i don’t want them to think i’ve forgotten my roots, but i don’t want to remember they’re mine.

  32. What was my aunt’s car doing in the driveway? None of our extended family came over here, especially not since we moved all the way across the country. Nevertheless, I walked toward the door, and, with as much care as the first cut during a surgery, cracked open the front door.

  33. They’re like whores on a dock when the new ship in port drops anchor.

    Or not.

Not all families are like parasitic leeches teeming with blood borne pathogens. But I believe that’s more “relative” than “relatives”.

  34. I understand relatives are families. They are people who have blood connections with us. Relatives are not always have close relationships with us. The only connection between relatives and me sometimes are just from genetic aspect.

  40. I have more relatives than I can count, so many relatives that I don’t even know all of their names anymore.
Family is supposed to be about love and community, but there comes to a point when there’s too many to even form a real community anymore. Living thousands of miles away, across oceans, doesn’t help, either.
But I have a lot of relatives. I’m just not sure if they’re related.
