  21. My eyes burned, crusted over with too much salt. I could feel the now-familiar sensation climbing up my throat, collecting in a large lump at the back of my mouth. My tongue felt too big for the space. I swallowed. It didn’t help. It never had. Glancing at the little yellow pill in my hand, I knew by now that it was the only way to reverse things. To make things right again. I’d gone over the situation too many times to count, and this was the best way. I allowed myself a split second to remember his face. His eyes. His hands as they held me.

Too soon. I had remembered him too soon. The memories kept flooding in. His eyes, hard, glazed over without looking at me. A large white door, slamming in my face, lips, forming words I didn’t want to hear. Nights not filled with enough sleep, mornings filled with violent retching that brought up the food I never ate. My body quaking with shivers I couldn’t stop no matter how hard I tried. The sound of my heart breaking. Everywhere, absolute hatred for everyone except the one who caused me pain.

    The yellow pill.
    And then, ah, welcome darkness.

  24. The poison dripped off my lips; one drop then two. By the third drop I fell to the floor and I saw my body as I floated up as whatever I was now. As I hovered up above the earth I looked back at myself and the tiny bottle in my now cold hand. I wondered to myself if it was really worth it. I mused until I became a tiny speck and until I could see myself no longer.
