  7. Mode. It was a word that started with the letter ‘m’, which was followed closely by the alphabet ‘o’, the the curious fourth alphabet ‘d’, and finally, the last letter that made up the word, ‘e’. To say that ‘Mode’ was an interesting word, was an understatement. On the contrary, it was hardly intriguing.

  8. Mode, the French word for fashion. I sit, kicking the seat in front of me, half-listening to the dulcet tones of my French professor. Ten minutes to the weekend, ten minutes closer to the summer, ten minutes closer to seeing him again. Excited, I didn’t know. Maybe more afraid than anything else.

  11. Edna Mode strides into the room, thick chunky spectacles sit on her nose bridge. Her angular bob swishes from side to side as she moves towards the secret room. She fishes out a plastic ID card and swipes it against the reader, the door slides open with a flourish. Cackling silently, she pulls the lever down to: Extreme Mode.

  12. simple faces find me in the realm of simplicity as I enter this feeling I have invented through my organs. It is only simple to say poop is through the wall. If I were to sit back and watch as they would perform the old in out i out, then I would be confounded to prisoner as a pet.

  15. I am in vacation mode this week. So nice to have the time to do anything we want and not to have to rush around like crazy people. This mode makes me happy! When I get too busy it is easy to forget to not enjoy the present because we are so focused on the what next. Vacation mode may not be so great if it were like this every day. It makes us appreciate these great bits of time together.

  22. One mode of coping to mortality is to scream like a siren and wave your arms in a cyclonic motion. Another is to take up a clipboard and start making small notes with a green pen. I like to dress in a chicken suit and dance to ragtime piano. All of these methods are appropriate and ineffective.

  24. A type. A model. A certain way of doing something. The thing you get in the mood for. A way of trying to become like yourself. You must shape yourself to be this, you must make yourself to not be this. It is the mold we fit and the air we breathe. Something as simple as four letters but complicated as life.

  27. It was so simple a matter. Why couldn’t we decide on which mode of transportation to use? Why did we always have to argue so much? Nothing was ever simple with my friend and i.

  30. mode is one way of describing fashion. It is of latin origins and is also moda in italian. Italy is famous for its designer fashions and couture. Uh I dunno. I like dolce and gabbana, personally, and john galliano. He is great. Not so much Miucca prada, or the fendi lines. Not a big fan, honestly. I love fashion, as you can tell. Cant believe I wrote this much.

  34. When I was in cleaning mode today, all I could think about was how simplified it was to organize things at work than it was in my own room. The things at work hold no sentimental value, nor is there too much of it. It’s always been easier for me to organize someone elses’ things, but for me, organizing my own stuff can also add more clutter. I’m not sure why, but it does happen, and I guess because I want to hold things that I don’t want to regret I got rid of later (since I’ve done it a few times), and also because some things hold sentimental value. But I am not a pack-rat nor extremely messy. I can’t stand either.

  35. i really don’t know the definition of mode. when this word came up i thought of the different “modes” i go into when i need to protect myself from others knowing how i really feel inside. first one that comes to mind is my “happy mode” i use this alot, i feel that showing the true depth of my sadness is showing that i’m week, so i put on a happy face and pretend sad is the furthest thing from what i’m feeling at the moment. really though, it does the opposite of protect me. it makes it worse and makes me feel even more sad inside, but then, i just get better at “happy mode”. i’ve gotten so good at it that i think i’ve forgotten how to be sad. . . .how to be vulnerable.

  36. The mode of transport I prefer is probably bicycling. You can enjoy nature and fresh air and the sunlight while on a trip on your bicycle. Being in a car just seems dangerous and confining to me. The bicycle also gets you active and brings fresh air into your lungs.

    by Wall on 04.23.2009
  37. The active mode was ON, making the day more exciting that it had seemed to be at first. The acceleration did glue us into our seats but no one complained when the galaxy started to crush on the giant windshield. Stars, no bugs: Being an astronaut has a few perks.

  38. i feel like there’s this mode i go into sometimes. sometimes when people i like too much are around. the people who i wish i could love, that can’t love me back. i go into this intense mode of over-analyzing everything. it’s fucking strange to feel like you’re on some auto-pilot that causes self-sabotage.

    by charles on 04.23.2009
  39. Mode is a crappy word. It makes me think of the Spanish phrase “de moda” which means “in fashion”. I always thought that was cool because in english we don’t say anything like “in the current mode” but what do you know, Spanish is just that much cooler than English.

  40. He loved apple pie, but he loved it with ice cream best. Sometimes a slice of cheddar cheese. I remember asking dad wwhat “a la mode” meant and wondering hwo the two conected. I’ve always loved playing with words, wondering about their connections and meanings and how to say the thing in a different way.
