Shannon blinked at me. “Dude.” She pointed at my character sheet. “You elf is seriously misaligned.”
“And why’s that?”
Brennan, who played a dwarf paladin, wrinkled his nose. “What’s wrong with a chaotic evil elf?”
“They’re peaceful!” Shannon cried. “They’re serene and calm and level-headed!”
“Hey, Shannon?” Carly, our dungeon master, piped up. “Maybe let the elf lady go crazy on the goblins’ asses, okay?”

My teeth are misaligned
so my mother takes me to the orthodontist
an awful middle-aged man
he takes my teeth in his pliers
and pulls and pulls and
until *poof* they’re all gone
every last one
“All done!” he beams
“A perfect smile.”

Something slipped out of her stomach and fell in a little gelatinous puddle next to her feet. There was a cavity where it had been, etched out of bone and studded with little crustacean creatures that had made their homes there.

They tried to talk to one another, but their words misaligned. He said yes for her no, and she said hello for his goodbye. They ordered drinks together at the bar and got what each other wanted, but not what they wanted themselves.

we were never meant to be. we were just people, two of them, standing where we are as the world crashed and burned and died and lived around us. we hovered on the line between the overworld and the gritty underworld, where dealings exchanged hands as easy as they would drinks. we were just broken people lost like everyone else. we were never meant to be, but you’ve never liked that kind of fate, so you reached for me all the same, and now we are misaligned, but somehow still entangled.
i think i can live with that.

Jarred out of place, the puzzle with an extra piece and one of the pieces you thought fit is just sitting there with gaps in its teeth, the crooked smile of a favorite painting hanging at an angle, maybe it’s the angle you always wanted on your wall, the misalignment acquired only through the slow accumulation of bumps and adjustments, alignment as new, its loss the register of time spent in a loving home

The values in our society regarding women are misaligned. Clearly, with so many sexual assault and harassment charges coming to light, women are not viewed as fully human beings. This is something that needs to change…and soon.
