  1. Warm leaves gently dancing down to meet the grass, a chill in the air to solidify the loneliness of centuries. Every hue reminiscent of him, the devilish grin with raven black hair, a man who would burn down the world for me.

I grabbed maple seeds the day I left, a fistful of home as I crammed them in my backpack and waited for my flight, I kept them for years and years among rice paddies and typhoons, of landslides and black helicopters hunting the New People’s Army, in sunflower Christmases and languages I did not know, with mango-sticky fingers and my feet tapping to the beat of the gongs until they crumbled into dust, forgotten in my purse.

  3. The maple trees shuddered in the cold wind, as the family went out into the forest to tape the trees for maple syrup. The children were careful with carrying the buckets back to the farm, and then watched the whole process of making the syrup.

  4. Nonso had never been a fan of honey. Something about the taste feeling like a fraud. So when he found out that he could replace that with maple syrup and that the latter would be of more benefit to his weight loss journey, he jumped right in. The stuffy nose and rashes a few days in told him otherwise, though.
