  1. I have this keychain with little red and white sparkles in it. The sparkles always stick to the top of the keychain and it’s been a great challenge to get them off. Once i did it. I got the sparkles to stop sticking. I wish other people were as excited as i was. Guess it’s really just a keychian, huh?

  2. It was pink. And fuzzy. It wasn’t the sort of thing a professional woman carried in her purse. Of course, most women didn’t have poodles named Precious either. Or maybe they did. Maybe I wanted to believe they didn’t. That I was unique.

  5. submit to waves. The best huckleberry I ever had was five in the evening on goat mountains and hour outside of tacoma. the dog had nearly i thought died from the heat and lack of water but near the hucklebery patch we found a stream. And white mountain goats loud as bullseyes against the dark grey mountains, no longer camoflauged by winter snow. i was thinking how i’d never tasted a huckleberry so sweet and how was it here and how the best tasting things come after near death, drought, and pain.

  6. Some people collect keychains. Eventually they end up with this giant, blinking, jangly, mess of memories. While they always served NO purpose and often times became a bit of a nuisance, they do offer an interesting way to chronicle memories. Sometimes it’s a theme park.

  7. off the key chain. who knew what a key could do? i’m chained to this here desk but at least it doesn’t hurt. I know where I am and usually I know what I’m doing. Typing working surfing. Ahh it’s a thrill a minute. Speaking of thrills I’m going to Tahiti next month, to dive. Chills at the thought but chilly is not the weather.

  8. Keychains are optional. They jingle on my boyfriend’s pants when he attaches them to the belt loop. At least I always know when he is coming around. There is no way to sneak up on someone if you have a keychain jingling away.

  10. I’m beginning to understand why I never make it on time to certain events. I came home yesterday and my damn dog was choking on something, I had no idea what to do with him so I just stood there. Turns out he was choking on my keychain that holds my keys for the house and the car. Another shitty day in this lovely life.

  36. “If you let all your hopes and goals dangle off of your keychain like that, you’ll never get anywhere in life.”

My mother hadn’t listened to him. My father had listened politely, patiently, but hadn’t taken his advice seriously. Afterall, Hank tended to say some strange things.

“I once met a man out in Missouri who could chew daisies and live off ’em. That’s the kinda man I like, I says. Livin’ off the land and utulizin it too. Yessuh.”

My mother had told me that Grandpa Hank told us grandchildren these stories just as that – stories. Fables, at the very least. But my cousins would laugh. Fables? they’d say. What is there to learn from a crazy that eats flowers?

I was ever the only one who actually took Grandpa Hank’s words to heart. Maybe it was the lack of religion in my family that made me follow all of my grandfather’s advice religiously.

“Wake up each mornin, I do, and listen to them bluejays singin their songs, fillin my old crinkly ears with their pretty melodies.”

So I do too. I wake up each morning and listen for the bluejays, wait for their pretty songs to fill my ears. Then I mix in three daisy petals in my cereal. This way, Grandpa Hank can live on in me, even if he did pass on more than fifteen years ago. And I never, ever, let my dreams dangle off of a keychain.
