  1. She says you can tell a lot
about a person from their hands,
    reading callouses and palms
like gypsies, a sunday full of
    esoteric attentions –

or, at least they seem to me.
    I’ve never had someone
    notice the freckle underneath
    my bracelets, the excess callous
    above my Solomon’s curve.

    I’ve never had someone ask
about all the things I’ve held,
    just to know them.

  2. Gypsy is a slur, and you should know better, man. So is dyke, and f*ggot, and of course, the all powerful n-word. Mind your mouth when it comes to these terms, because I promise you, your privilege is about to turn into an angry dragon and bite your goddamn head off. Oh, and don’t shriek, “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS! MAH FREE SPEECH!” because you can say 90% of what you damn well please; you won’t miss the other 10%.

  3. are we overly sensitive
    she asked me
a lit cigarette parked between her teeth
    i was wondering ponderously
    are we left behind
or is the future like yesterday
do we forget the pain we prayed
to call a gypsy by her name
as we press our lips together
    two pronouns to pronounce
    too complicated to be acceptable

  4. She’s been to Paris, she tells me. She’s been to Dubai. She roamed the streets of Bangkok, got sunburnt in Cairo, learned to dance in Madrid. She stood before Christ the Redeemer and St. Basil’s Cathedral and was too stunned to even lift a camera. She’s seen four of the seven wonders of the world, and still she chooses to tell me that I am the most beautiful thing she’s ever seen.

They teach me Fortune telling but I don’t quite get it, since most of my tellings are not accurate. People end up questioning what I tell them. When trading I find my self enjoying this time better the outcome is much better, I come with much more goods then most people in my tribe.

  17. They told me to stay away. They said she was a pikey. She’d use me and break my heart.

Outraged I vented at home, sure that my plight would appeal to my mum’s inner social justice warrior. Her response was rather subdued, “Gypsies never stay in one place long, my love. Best not get too attached.”

I didn’t listen. We found ourselves in trouble and she couldn’t tell her family so I brought her home only to see my mother’s nose crinkle with disdain. My proud, black, warrior mother refused to look my pregnant girlfriend in the eye.

  25. The long history of the word “gypsy” starts about 8000 BC. It was originally a word used to describe the sound a mammoth made when it sat on a duck. Then, over time, the word transformed. Now in the year 2755 it’s found it’s proper use in describing a successful settlment on a small moon.
