  21. The were five hands pressing against the foggy morning glass. Five sets of eyes watching as the air plane began its descent into the cold November morning. There were five small, innocent scuffles of feet away from lounge where “Flight Departures” lit up with the morning light. Five hands, five pairs of eyes, five sets of feet–all things which bring into question why a fifth deployment in five years should ever be necessary.

  23. two months ago she hit rock bottom. only had five dollars in her pocket. then, the girl, Sylvia goes up to the counter of a diner and asks me, shall i say, begged for a job. Of course, i had to give it to her, what kind of person would i be if i didn’t? The next day she comes into work, prepared. Then, she works her ass off ’til nine. i am curious to hear her story, everyone has one. I have had many girls come into my diner asking for a job, always broke and always ready to work and be good at it. Hey, come sit with me a minute i holler to her. I cook up a plate of fries set them down with a glass of coke and say, here. Oh, i can’t take this, she replies. don’t worry ’bout it darling. she eats like there is no tomorrow. Slow down, girl, i’m not gonna take ’em away from ya, i promise. Listen, i called you over here to see why you come to the middle of no where to get a job at this old joint, i say. Well, it is quite a long story to be honest, m’am. she says to me. honey, i say, i have nothing but time.

  27. Five minutes. Five people. It was hard not to act shocked as I glanced around the New South China Mall, analyzing people, forging cover stories. Among five thousand shoppers, maybe more, I had to find five operatives. In the largest mall in the world. And blend in.
Five skilled agents against my lousy five senses.
Smacking my mouth closed, I gingerly chewed my gum, took out a camera, and shot a picture. Easy as pie.

  28. five nurses gathered around the receptiondesk looking at me in sypathy, In the corner of my eye I could see Jenny, sitting awkwardly on a chair staring at the drops of rain and the gloomy blue sky she looked lost and confused…it was weird seeing her like that my last memory of her was when she was dancing around in a satin communion dress , she was so spirited and joyful now she looked so far apart from that. I nervously walked towards her she didn’t see me coming, what was I going to say? …as I took each step closer to her it was like walking back through memory lane this wasn’t the first time I had been called into the hospital due to mam…..the hospital smelt of sanitiser and cleanliness . I sat down beside Jenny she didn’t even acknowledge me, I could sense her coldness towards me ‘Jenny?’ I said , she turned her head and just looked at me with no emotion in her eyes and automatically lifted herself from the chair and walked off.

  29. Five seconds go by; my mind is blank. So many thoughts are running through my head it is as if there are none at all. Five minutes pass in this meaningless state. Then five hours, five days, five years. This state is the state of living yet being dead.
