He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

Now, I know. I understand. That he’s not an angel, he’s a devil. He reaches into my heart, grabs it out brutally and feeds upon it.

    I close my eyes.
“Honey,” he says in a simpering smile, sweet as dew.

“It’s affecting our alpha.” I said, cutting him off. “That MAKES it pack business.”
    “Still, it SEEMS like meddling.”

He sighed, rubbing at the bridge of his nose in equal parts irritation and reluctance. “Are you CERTAIN, Zerah?”
    I nodded. “Yes, sir.”

  20. We delved into Shakespeare for most of the semester, focusing on the tragedies more than the comedies. Well, save for the romances, which were wedged into an awkward sort of category in which not even the most prestigious scholars could exactly figure out where they belonged. At the end of the year, we got to do some cool stuff – write extension acts to plays, perform monologues. I recited the “I have of late” speech from Hamlet, having it stuck in my head for so many years since high school. And I did it to impress her.

  28. I had to delve down the back of the sofa for money to buy a pot noodle. As i reached in, my arm went deeper and deeper – I could just feel the coins with the ends of my fingertips. Then blackness. I was falling – or was I? No, I was just floating. My eyes began to adjust to the lack of light, or rather the quality of this new light. So. Much. Light. So. Bright, so…so huge my eyes could not take it in. From where I hung in stasis, in darkness, I could see galaxies being created and destroyed, black holes swallowing all things that ever existed (so that’s where my Elvis comb went!). I could see time itself, in the shape of an infinitely large seashell – I listened, and could hear the sound of a billion, billion seas, the distant waves rolling onto unknown shores where now I felt my feet leave their impressions on the wet sand. I reached down and my hand was cool in the water and glittering softly in the water was a small constellation of stars, some larger , some smaller, twinkling and shimmering – I reached for them. I held them in my hand. Seventy nine pence. The price of my Pot Noodle.
