She scribbled furiously, brought to life by the rhyme and meter of her poetry. At the end of each line, a dash, a door to the next thought, a path, a river. Oh, Emily, how you loved to end your phrases with an m dash–
I should have dashed from the event. Left without looking back but instead I ran towards a bad idea without abandon, completely knowing the whole time that I was going to regret this. And I was right, I am regret.
She felt her sentence end with a dash. She knew she was gonna be interrupted before she got to the end anyway. He didn’t, though. He was supposed to. She rolled her eyes and let the silence sit.
Am I moving too quickly at this moment? I can feel it in every fiber of my being. Trying to make it to this finish line and finish line that I can’t possibly achieve. There is so much more to this life than simply trying to make it to the end. It’s about the journey, it’s about each fleeting moment floating from existence. I hold onto that in between and hope I didn’t move to quick.

Someone is always in a hurry, and you can’t help but wonder where they are going. What’s more important than taking the time to look both ways before crossing a busy city street near an intersection where the light’s gone bad? What could mean more than taking a moment to scour the sky for black birds wing, a stiff contrast to the magenta splashed with white? So much rushing toward asinine things, so many pieces of life just trickling away like spiders down a drain.
He stepped out of the room after a while, wearing his favourite suit, frowning.
“What’s the matter, dad?”, I asked, placing my hand on his back.
“I don’t know, you think she would like it?”, he still kept his worried look on.
I led him out to the living room as the sunshine filled the space.
“She’s been gone for a few years now, but I’m pretty sure she will love you no matter what you wear.” I kissed him on the cheek, and drove us to her tomb.
“You look dashing, dad.”
The call came in just as she was to attend what perhaps would be one of the most important meetings of her life. As the others all gathered around the table, she realized she had to dash out of there without a good excuse
… just a dash of paprika. The kind that came from the Homeland, over boat in your great-grandmother’s suitcase. It was real and wholesome, something you cannot find in a grocery store jar.
I like to use dashes when I write-seems to give a person time to take a breath before the next thought comes up. I think a dash gives more space to thoughts written then comas or periods.
She dashed across the parking lot and jumped into her open convertible. She quickly started it up and took off as if she had somewhere important to be.
My hand dashed across the page but I didn’t recognize the words that were coming out the other end. My brain wasn’t processing what my hand was saying. Some religions believe in “speaking in tongues,” where the soul just takes over speech…well right now I can only say it feels like my demon has taken over my hand.
A quick dash of this spice and a pinch of that spice and another 20 minutes in the oven to soak up the sauce. AAAAND BAM! I’ve ruined it, because I can’t cook.
Some guys stole all the twenties from the cash register at my dad’s liquor store, but when they tried to make a dash for it, they crossed paths with our adorable pit bull, Larry. Larry was, in reality, a total sweetheart, but it was enough to make the grown-ass dudes shriek like prima donnas and run the other way. The police were happy to cart them off to the local jail, and Larry got some treats out of it, so I’d say it was a good day for my big, lovable pooch.

to run fast – quickly – could also me a pinch of an ingredient – a burst or a little amount. could also mean a hyphen that I am using in this text.
