“Maybe.” Bea wrinkled her nose. “I don’t know. I’d much rather a fairy though, than an old man that eats cheese.”
The girls giggled together in the evening’s final lights.
For some reason, people look up to me as a leader, someone who has it all together. But if they saw the way I cried under August’s crescent moon, looking up to the billions of stars for some fragment of an answer, they would understand my broken body. Sometimes I sit for minutes that feel like hours and lament growing up and the way people change right before my eyes. But maybe we’re all weak. Maybe we look for the strongest one out of all the deformed bodies to lead us to something more than this world has to offer.
She could only bring crescent rolls. She was a chef in her day to day life, but when it came to our family, we got the crescent rolls. The ones purchased at the local grocery. We weren’t good enough for the French bread she bragged about.
