  1. “I hate you, really.” she said with a smile that betrayed the cross tone of her voice as she flicked away undergrowth that snagged at her long pants and hiking boots. She hated the outdoors, hated the steady drone of insects and shit that buzzed around her ears and resonated like an unpleasant tickle in her head.

  2. It comes to pass that I am lost in a river bed at sunset. I feel you in the mud and water seeping up my calves then rushing past my thighs. More than anything trying to keep me in this place by the time you reach my waist. “Don’t leave”, “Don’t go” – don’t ask me how I know. It’s not a nightmare but an irrational dream nonetheless. By the time the muddy waters reach my chest your name is on my lips. A dare. A wicked, wicked dare. Still I’m so stubborn, love, I force myself awake before I let myself succumb to the urge to speak your name even my sleep. But I’ve never felt more hollow than in that pre-dawn realization, a handle on what I’d done, a course correction left me like a tree with no core, like a cave with no hearth, like a star so black no light escapes it. I called it freedom then. Yet I still look back on it and question.

  3. Ella handed the compass to Lara. “i dont know how to use this thing!” “Well i dont either!” said Lara. “We need a boy to help us,” said Ella. She hated how sexist that was, but it was kinda true. neither them nor any of their female friends knew how to use a compass. and they were quite lost. trees loomed all around them. the air was getting cooler with every passing minute and the sky was becoming grey and heavy with clouds.

  4. Where will I go, only my old compass can show me the way. I travel to the future. I travel to the past, but my compass keeps me on my track. Who knows which way I’ll go.

  5. Casey turned to check if the compass was actually pointing north, because if it was she should be close, if not there already, to Atlantis. She decided she should check while she could tell which was was north for once. The compass pointed southeast. Great.

  6. Direction. Where am I going? How did I get here? Where should I go next? This compass will guide me and keep me focused. It will stay with me and be useful to me. The compass lets me keep my focus.

  7. A magnetic tool that always points to north? Why North? Because it guides you in whatever troubles you have. Always go forward, even if you make mistakes. Keep your eye on the goal, no matter what. Intelligence only takes you so far. Grit, motivation, and work ethic are what ultimately take you where you want to go.

  8. Funny, isn’t it, how guidance evaporates the closer one arrives to true north. The moment the map is pulled out from under you marks the precipice of truly uncharted territory.

  9. That’s what I was looking for, The research.

  10. A compass, why a compass? I think I’ve only ever used one in my life, we have smartphones now, with google maps and GPS, compasses are almost obsolete unless you are looking for the upside down entrance, in which case, by all means, check your compass.
