  2. She stared at the flowers across the room she had brought him just a few days ago to lift his spirits. How did she get to this point? This wasn’t supposed to happen. Now he’s gone, and everything she’d hoped for in the future was gone. The experiences she planned to share, places she wished to visit, and the “old love” she looked forward to having with him one day… gone. Her heart sank further.

    “Would you like these?” the orderly preparing the room for the next patient asked. The mundane tone of his voice suggested this was no new experience for him like he was numb to the emotional gravity of the situation.

    On the verge of weeping, she glanced teary-eyed at the bouquet in his hand. “These were not intended to cause pain,” she thought. Then she lifted her eyes to look him in the face. “No. No, thank you,” she replied in regret.

  4. It appeared on my doorstep, partially wrapped in a loose cone of cellophane. No card. Lilies, which I dislike. They smell too strongly and drop pollen. Coloured, though, not the pure white associated in my mind with funerals. I might have taken that as a warning.

  5. He stopped at the corner and bought a bouquet of wildflowers. A child was selling them, telling him that she had picked them just this morning. He handed her a ten dollar bill and told her to keep the change. Her face brightened for a moment but as he walked away, she said, “Thank you for the money but what I would really like is to go back to school.”
