  36. It was a balmy breeze blowing in the Caribbean. A hammock swayed in the wind as a boy came with a coconut drink for me. I read a book as the sun slowly set into the blue waters of the horizon. I wondered if I could bring this sense of calmness back home. Was there a way? The sun dipped below the line of water and the stars began to come out one by one.

  39. One of my clearest memories from my childhood was this little incident with lip balm. My mother was (is still unfortunately) very much old fashioned. The rule around the house was that I was not to even TOUCH lip balm, lip gloss, and the like until I was 12, and being the little obedient girl (am still, to an unfortunate extent), I didn’t have it within me to challenge her.

I recall one time when I was six, I felt ever-so-daring and uncapped the little white lid to a lemon lip balm stick. Even now, the tangy lemon scent comes rushing back through the years to assuage my senses. It was the first rule of many I dared defy, and probably the most satisfying to a little attention-starved girl.
