The house was silhouetted in the glowing dusk. I stepped up towards the front door, inviting myself into the dinner party preparations.

This skater boy with his heart beneath the sleeve
surrendering his exterior to his love
his sweeter tastes force his desire
to let the wind take his breath
and his breath to take her in.

Her toes skimmed the wooden floors, reflected perfectly in the adjacent mirrors. Her hair fell gracefully upon her shoulders as she twirled. The soft keys of music keep the withering hush from the room.

His hair curled around the faded cloth as if it had grown with the hair, naturally fitting in with his style. It so effortlessly kept the stray hairs at bay, keeping his face clear of any annoyances.

They built the fort in the middle of some large trees. Made of wood, stone and mud, it held through the seasons, lasting many years, providing shelter to any who dared to stop by.

Confined to this space, surrounded on all sides by thick, brick walls, built to withstand any impact made by humans. I paced to and fro across my cell. My thoughts rewinded each and every memory, trying to piece together how I ended up in this situation.

It was difficult to determine the outcome of such an exuberant outburst of emotion. We stood there speechless, all eyes watching Nee’s heavy pants as he slowly calmed himself to a normal state of being.

I tried to stare at him, but he remained a blurry mess of colors behind my tears, trying not to fall. I didn’t know what to say or how to say it.

There it was, trapped, cornered between the two cement walls. The poor little rabbit was shaking in a frenzy. No where to turn, it shrunk into the walls, unsuccessful in its attempt to camouflage with the walls.

He had done it. he had started this whole thing and he wouldn’t even take the fall. After all the talks of being braver and more responsible, on becoming a better person, and he can’t even admit that he had done it.
I spoke up “He’s the one. He is the instigator. Don’t go after her, she was only a victim of his mad schemes.”

The candles lit, sailing on a birthday cake ship from the kitchen to the dining room. Gently placed in front of her, she admired the flames and how their shadows danced across the frosting.

The sultry sound of her voice carried through the empty hall, reflecting off the tall pillars leading across the way. It rang loud and clear to the young man numbly carrying on his life. His head suddenly perked up, eyes and ears searching, roaming for that voice and its owner.

His artwork spanned across the entire wall. It was a mixture of different ideas and colors, as one giant collage. I could see the memories, the strong emotions, the shapes of people he carefully or not-so carefully designed. It was a masterpiece.

As I looked into her eyes, I realized why people treated her with the highest respect. It was as if I was filled with a reverence towards her so strong, I had to fight the urge to bow and murmur apologies at her feet.

The sun gently hooked its long, rays of fingers across the mountain tops, reaching higher and higher. The clouds stroked his fingertips, tempting them to grab hold of the pull higher. Colors changed, from dark blue to light blue, and pink with orange, yellow on the ends. A sight to behold, miraculous to any spectators.

It happened. She had reached a new level. Her strength and training finally paid off. She was finally going to achieve what all others had done, those who had told her it was impossible for her to do, for any woman to do.

It was the single most incredible of my whole life up until that point. I couldn’t believe it. The sights before my eyes. The beauty surrounding me. Nature, filled with the leaves and the stones etched from the constant flow of the river, the sun sinking its way to the other side of the planet.

Her arms were a welcoming embrace, filled with the smells of home, the warmth of love.

Her blanket, almost as old as she, protected her from the dangers of the outside world. Her shield from the too curious of eyes, from the painful comments, from all the questions, from any responsibility whatsoever. It allowed to exist in her world, one where she felt welcome and lost in the sweet smells of happiness and home. It was her only constant security in life.

His heart was gold. The light shone out of him as if sent from the sun itself. He looked so powerful, so godlike. His face shone of the all the different hues of yellow and orange, a sea of sunlight. His eyes glowed with the power of what he had just become and what he could achieve.

This was her domain. This was her turf, her ground, her last line to defend. It was her home. She knew how to run the place, no this nameless man, eyeing the walls and the windows like he’s been here before. Running the show was her job, it’s what she excelled at. There was no way he could master the skills as she had and does. She was a veteran, lasting until the end of time.

Selective participation. That’s what they called it back in the big leagues. When the teacher chooses lessons that require only a selective participation from a sea of students among the ocean of their peers.
Those two words were on replay in my head as I sat at my desk while the students scanned and filled out the packet of papers recently handed to them.

I learned of the different values. The ones you keep and the ones that you have to let go sometimes, or the ones that require a pinch of leniency.

Their juvenile actions and lackadaisical attitudes weren’t helping the image of the team. Their irresponsibility gave the outsiders an image of an immature and reckless team. Nobody wanted anything to do with the team. No aid, no support, no cheers. Nothing.

It is complete, utter, crazy nonsense. It is the best kind of lame, and a stupid kind of fantastic. It makes my heart race like wings of a hummingbird. A waste of time, but the happiest time to waste. A smile that shines from the face of tan and brown features, a star made of incisors, canines and molars. It’s like that first ray of sunshine to break through the gray storm clouds. Eyes, made from the brown, comforting warmth of mother nature. A voice made to be echoed from radios and music boxes, its soothing tempo lulling the heart to calm. The freckles, sprinkled across thin cheeks leading down to skinny, soft lips that press together in gentleness.

We were seated only a few rows down from our favorite celebrities. That singer from our favorite band; two musicians chatting with people; the actor who seems to take every role giving to him; miss petite with the sharp smile from that recent movie.

I was compensating for all she had lost. Her mother, her father, her siblings, her love. I was the only one left, and all I wanted was for her to have eyes full of life, to add a spring to her step.

I placed third in the competition. My heart was stuttering and my breath coming short. Here I am standing, in honor, next to the two greatest and I get to say that “Yes, I did do it. And yes I stood there proudly.” I looked over at the winner and second-winner and they looked back at me ith a smile in their eyes and victory in their smile.

We walked around the block, the cinema coming into view. The red, green, yellow and blue lights flashed on in off in sequence. Red, then green, then yellow, then blue, and then all at once. Then it begins again.
Our hands swung between us. His giant, strong hands encompassing my small and thin one.

Her hair was unkempt and messy, falling elegantly from the worn out bun. Her fingers reached up to scratch her head again and smooth it over, strands falling loose on either side of her forehead. Lip held between teeth as she concentrated on the assignment before her.
