pony

I stood and hacked at her withering mane with a brush. Then, I brushed the rest of her body in smooth, wide circles. It was calming.

flood

I ran through the trees, my chest heaving from sprinting and hyperventilating, my eyes decreasing to slits and tears streaming over my cheekbones, creating a flood that streamed vertically, clinging to my skin. The rain started to hit the canopy above, and after a few seconds, the clouds formed one solid block of gray and poured with all of their might. The branches scratched my face, elongating to reach my pale skin, rough like a grandmother’s nails. The lightning flashed and the world changed colors and back again to darkness faster than my feet were hitting the increasingly soggy ground. Combining with the light, the rain sounded like it hit metal, and the trees shined in the split second of light. I was reminded of him, and felt like heaven, my feet lightened and my heart jumped a beat. I pretended that we were there together, again, in his place of gears and springs, I pretended that the lightning was the copper plates and that it was warm and safe, I fooled myself into believing, and I had lost my mind completely. So completely, that I forgot, and when I saw a figure in the darkness I opened my arms wide and waved them crazily instead of hiding and counting to make my breathing slow. The bullet was so fast, it hit me before I heard the sound. Not that I would have, because it was silent. I wouldn’t ever hear the news of their new snipers, though.

gown

I fingered the gown in my hands, the silky hem that was interwoven and crafted to perfection. I wanted to pluck a thread and pull my way out, break open from my identity and become someone much different than I. I knew it would never work, even temporarily being someone else was a stretch, but my brain started mapping and planning. Who wouldn’t want to be me for a day? I mean, I wouldn’t, but surely someone else would fall for the lies that come with me…

view

The hit numbers are moving up so fast that they are blurred. How could this be happening? The whole screen goes black. Some tiny dots blink on the screen and position themselves into words, words that I don’t want to read. Not only do I have a virus, I am being blackmailed. It is definitely, definitely settled. And they are going to pay.

platinum

She tossed her platinum hair, a curtain of poison sheathed in a long ponytail. My scowl unfurled like a carpet, a curving shape like the spine of a cat. We almost made a castle together, her tower of tallness and me, the drawbridge, knocked down and trampled upon. I hated her, she hated me. What more could a castle atmosphere be?

obey

I thrash in the depths of the water and my breath bubbles out of my mouth, my hair, a cocoon, a nest, a net with me tangled in it. I try not to breathe, not to obey the crushing force that comes at a depth this deep, I try to keep my air in, it is at war with me, expanding and fighting like a baby in a womb.

stable

I leaned on the table as I shoveled food into my mouth, and it inched farther back as the legs jiggled. The massive oak table creaked as it hit its interlocking joints, and I put my feet up onto the bar and leaned back against the chair as soon as my stomach had caught up with my huge eyes. From the other side of the table, Rose kicked me, and when I didn’t sit up quick enough to satisfy, I earned another kick. Shrike was next to me, and her hot breathe stuck itself to the inside of my earlobe. “Get your feet of this table, it is not a horses stable!” she hissed, quiet enough for only me to hear, but it was loud and clear to me, it rang in my ears like the clock that woke me up every dawn.

slouch

I slouched on the couch that sank and pulled me into its expensive depths. “I’m so tired, though. Can’t we just stay for ONE night?” Hea sighed. “Well, it is comfortable. I’m sure one night couldn’t do that much harm…”

museum

I sat in the lobby chair and traced the bottom in between my leg, following the scraped groves in a loop. She handed me the ticket and I put the loop around my wrist. We walked around the paintings over and over again, while I tried to stifle my yawns. To the right, a room caught my eye. “Dinosaurs,” I thought. “Now THAT’S exciting.” My older sister rolled her eyes. “What’s so great about a pile of bones?” She said.

president

The president walks into the room before I leave, and I restrain myself from rolling my eyes. I don’t need some good luck speech. And I won’t win this for my country, or me. I’ll win it for Faye, and Seam. I don’t care about anyone else. I don’t see why I was picked for the hand to hand combat, and my heavy armor just gets in the way. I ignore the president and walk into the arena, instantly blinded. I take one deep breath before the bell, and when the sound comes, the first thing I do is take it off. The crowd gasps when they see my braid, which was tucked neatly underneath my armor. I ignore them, and take a first glance at my opponent. Then, I satisfy my nerves with a deserved gulp.

horses

The hooves clattered against the pavement in time with my racing heart. I feinted to the right and ducked behind a cart with watermelons. But I knew they would find me. There were too many. I apologized to the owner and tipped it over, the fruits rolling everywhere. I darted away as fast as I could. When I was sure I had enough time before they saw me, I slipped into the canal and dove underneath the grate. The horses and the men were too late. I was gone.

stunning

A diamond necklace in a box was clasped without a neck to hug, its mistress staying in for the evening. But the girl it scruffy clothing who sat hidden by the adorned curtains thought that if she had a necklace so heavy and noticeable like that, she would throw it down the hills, for it would weigh down her already heavy heart and she could not disappear being the fox as she was, so she left the window ledge in a confident backwards flip.

I saw a lady with a fur coat and a golden monkey one day, in my dreams, and the thought was so striking with the dust that swirled around her. The air was brisk like a honey wafer and colored streaks trailed over the sky like airplanes.
