instant

In an instant, everything can change. In a flash, life as you know it can cease to exist. So hold onto these golden mundane moments. Celebrate the quotidian joys. Because we all know that everything can change in an instant when you’re not even looking.

gameplan

What’s the gameplay? Every Saturday my father would ask what the plans were for the weekend.
My Mom, sister and I knew what we wanted to do–go shopping and have lunch out.

cheerleader

I once tried out for cheerleader. What was I thinking? I wasn’t blond. I couldn’t jump. I was smart and brunette and sincere. I thought that maybe some high power would propel me and enable me to jump high. The real reason I tried out was a girl named LN.

mop

I remember the mop my Mom had–it was kind of floppy. Sometimes, I helped her clean the house and I would dance around the room with the mop. You could take it off the long handle to wash.
I believe it was an old-fashioned mop.

witheld

Affection withheld does tremendous damage.
As does love, praise and encouragement witheld.
Embrace the fact that we are here to give and share with others
and not to withhold.

windows

It’s all about windows, looking out, looking in. Last night, I saw curtains draping a large seascape on the wall of an unassuming house but the painting was important. Ah, the statements we make about our lives and how we try to make them larger.

invite

Will you invite me? Will you take me into your life and into your heart?
Will you extend yourself to me? Will you invite intimacy? Will you understand
that this is crucial? Because, if you don’t invite me, I will invite myself.

fading

The light is fading. The day is dwindling down. What can we do to keep our spirits from flagging too? The clouds are fading into dusk and evening soon night. Fading is a blending, a transition,
I can embrace the color change.

waitress

It’s a tough job, being a waitress. Especially today when everyone changes the items on the
menues. You know, I’ll have the fish, no sauce, and the asparagus, no potatoes. Everyone tries to change everything.

clockwork

A clockwork orange, a movie I never saw. Habitual, we say, things happen like clockwork.
But in these crazy times, everything seems off. I love clocks. I love the concept of time even if we spend our lives rebelling against the clock.

bark

Don’t bark up that tree. People used to say this when they meant avoid something, avoid it like
the plague. And dogs bark and bark all night. You hear them as you drift off to sleep.
Or maybe you’re rubbing your hand over the bark of the tree.

unopened

Unopened, the letter sits here on my kitchen counter. I cut lemons, chop potatoes, shred dill and through it all your letter sits here. How long can it live here in silence? The fact is that I don’t want to know what it says. Why should I believe you now? If you want me back or don’t, all immaterial to me. I haven’t brought myself to throw it out yet. Each night I read my name in your handwriting.
It’s enough for me.

broken

So many lives broken by outside events and internal emotions. If we could fix one life, if we could help someone. If we could help ourselves. Broken implies, can be fixed, there is hope, Humpty Dumpty can be put back together again. Hurray!

burning

I think of Moses and the burning bush. I think of my eyes burning from drops when I saw you
walking on the street. I was on the train and I didn’t call to you. I let you walk away. It would take years until I learned that we have to ask for what we want–we have to yell and scream and make
a scene. I didn’t know that back then.

tutor

I want to tutor people on how to live their lives, how to find the joy, how to face the sorrow, but above all to wring every minute out of every day so that at evening, they can say, Today I did this:
I felt, I loved, I created.

monsters

Give a little monster a chance and it will bite your leg. I saw this on TV once and have always remembered the line. Perhaps it’s a metaphor for other aspects of life.

vacant

I think of vacant lots and vacant eyes. Also, vacant apartments. I remember leaving my first apt. on Commonwealth Avenue, sweeping the wood floors and crying for all the growing up I did there.
Moving on to a full life. No vacancy.

staircase

Up the Down Staircase was a wonderful book about a teacher in NYC and all her trials and tribulations along with the joys of reaching her students. Today, one of my senior adult students said, “I loved to see the sparkle in a student’s eye when she finally go it.”

zone

Sometimes when I’m writing, I am in the zone. I hear birds, I feel my feet on the floor but my mind is playing with words and ideas and I see violet and palm trees and I can soar My words will be magnificent.

anthem

When he heard the National Anthem, he immediately stood, placed his hand over his heart, and began singing. He felt strongly that this was an important way to honor his country.

wayward

The wayward girl was nothing but trouble. She was constantly disobeying her parents and defying her teachers. No one knew what to do for her or to her. Nothing worked until the day that the sad, little dog walked across her path on the way home from school.

symbolic

The bald eagle is symbolic of our country. It is a bold, majestic bird that is free. Freedom is so important to our country that the bald eagle is a perfect symbol for us. Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey, but it is neither bold nor majestic. Can you imagine the turkey on the picture of our currency instead of the bald eagle? Not quite the same now, is it?

element

I remember studying the Periodic Table of elements. I loved the fact that all things in the world could be distilled into two letter explanations laid out on a placemat as it were, the whole world before me on a table with my hands holding it at either end.

ordinary

Nobody is ordinary. Everyone has some quality which elevates him or her above the crowd.
It can be a smile, a gesture, a talent, red hair. It is our duty when we meet people to find out what lifts each one above the ordinary.

wishful

I am finished with wishful thinking. I am moving on to action, baby. Get up and do it. Wishful seems to admit defeat, seems to define victimhood. Wishful implies that you’re not going to get there.
I want to say get that wish done, baby.

footsteps

“What was that noise?” she said in a whisper. “I think it was footsteps,” I said turning to look in the direction of the noise. We were in the woods, sitting around the campfire after a long day hiking. This was not my idea of relaxing and, now, I had to contend with something ominous lurking in the woods. A bear? An escaped convict? An ax murderer?

degree

Degree has several meanings. It could be the measurement we use for temperature. It can also mean the term for what we earn at the end of college. It can also mean something similar to variant in as “To what degree would you go to make your position known.”

crumble

I was so mad! I had worked so hard on the cherry pie for my grandmother’s birthday. I wanted it to be perfect because she is an extraordinary baker and I wanted to show her that I could be a baker as well. Sadly, after I took the pie out of the oven and let it cool, when I went to cut it, the crust crumbled in piles all over the kitchen counter.

overtime

I don’t think that I ever got overtime pay. My jobs were such that I was expected to complete the work no matter how long it took.

Some of us work overtime on relationships. Do we get paid back enough for the effort we expend?
I hope so–in love!
