windy

on windowpanes that shine like hornets
who look daringy into their own reflection
peeling its way under worn, marbling wood
and lovely white slices of candlelight
wavering and sweet

broken

in the way that limbs from trees hang
gently and sway
gently the morning after a thunderstorm
that wrapped it’s arms around
foliage and homes with windoews glowing
gently and people inside whispering
gently

daisies

in a field of daisies
all summer gold
in the setting sun
and silver in the dusk
i close my eyes
but imagine they’re open
and imagine its morning
a late evening brand of lust

vacant

our cabin when we’re busy
and our home when we’re away
empty vacation rentals–
it depends on where we stay

baguette

makes me feel ridiculous
like poetry is halfway pointless
a joke, three quarters of a joke
and a dash of stereotype
with some offense, maybe a teaspoon
make that a tablespoon
and the recipe decides not to add up
difficult

swept

swept under the rug
swept away
swept off her feet
and caught in the wind
singing

amplified

conversations in my own language
ring from stranger to stranger
for stranger and
I’m caught in the middle and quiet
and calm and listening
to myself and thinking in a language
that used to be foreign

soda

Cool soda sipped in the
summer months; I am surrounded
by sun shining off of a lake’s surface.

butterflies

butterflies in my stomach is
a cliche but still translates better than
an elaborate description of what
I feel when the plane takes off
and when it lands somewhere new
and I am in the butterfly’s stomach
and that too is cliche

cartridge

ink cartridge in the printer
cartilage is the frame of my ear
cartilage is the frame for a shark
but not a cardinal whose car’s bridge
is pointless, it could fly to
cambridge

sisters

flamboyant inconsistancies
Sistine penitentiaries
sent and seen, since
sassafrass and syrup
silky mysteries

stunt

Stunt: Two Haikus

Trapeze artists and
flaming cars; the stunt I want
to pull is an A

on my calclus
final tomorrow. I am
feeling way too stressed.

scuba

scuba, a haiku:

I seem to have been
drifting for nine hundred years
but what does time mean

I hear that I’d hear silence
as if it were a marching band
as if it were a stampede of cars and motorcycles,
leaving my ears ringing like those fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

I hear that I’d feel weightless–
as if I were as astronaut, thrown out of the shuttle on my way to Mars–
and small, floating farther away, getting colder,
leaving my limbs to hang in the current.

I hear that color is so blue
my eyes will only see red above the surface,
and I’ll smile at the sun I missed, and
I’ll linger at the shore

misunderstanding

I wonder if things are ever quite clear between the sea and the sky
or the grass and the rain

breakthrough

Scientific breakthroughs are big deals, and
so are cultural breakthroughs and social and on.
They’re the type of things that get awards.
Still, when I move forward, progress, discover
in my own life, I hear myself breath out, and
it sounds like applause.

ghosts

My dog can smell ghosts, I think
or she can see them at least
because she barks out the
window late at night
or sits and stares at our walls

starfish

There aren’t much more than sunfish in
the river behind the house.
Or catfish, swimming beneath the dock. But
at night, when the river is still and reflective,
the stars hover on its surface,
and this is the closest thing to starfish
I have ever seen.

birds

birds, again, chirping
and the lapping of the lake
through open windows

My brother used to be big into birding,
but with him, things come and go,
and I think it ran its course.

My middle school science teacher
helped us to fill feeders for the birds who
flew through the woods outside our classroom.

On walks, sometimes, when I close my eyes,
you ask what birds I can hear,
And so I try to remember their names.

starving

I’m waiting and desperate for
the Golden Idea,
something to propell me forward
and upward and out into the
limelight.
I’m starving for that chance
to put my best foot forward and
be allowed a step,
grand and determined,
in the direction I want to go.
And here I sit, hollow with hunger
and aching in indecision.

eyeliner

Seldom used, there’s eyeliner that sits
on my bathroom counter in a bucket of
old makeup from when I thought I’d wear it,
but I’d much rather face the world as I am
so that it stands tall and knows to look me in the eyes

shoes

At the end of my bed sit a row
of shoes that I wear regularly and
I don’t think much of them except
that they are good and take me places
to see people, to do things
and so
thank you, shoes

shore

Minnesota nice is
the sun glowing low over
the still surface
of the lake outside
that old fashioned dinner club on
the other side of town

anthem

lawn mowers humming through
air heavy with sunshine,
phoebe birds and blue jays and chickadees as
an ecstatic harmony,
and in the distance, a baseball game with
low, cheering crowds:
the anthem of summer

» Posted By peri On 05.09.2017 @ 8:23 pm

dizzy

Thunder for the first time in months
rings and echoes and harmonizes with
the rain that falls in torrents, percussive
against my windows.
I close my eyes, of course, and
I listen and smile and
I don’t open them until the sky’s
voice turns gently soft.

empty

A mug sits empty on the counter before me
surrounded by the suggestion of steam
that has, like a ghost, long since disappeared.
And to the touch, the mug is lukewarm;
no longer a comfort to cold hands and soft lips.

humorous

A yellow warbler flies by outside the window
swings back around
and seems to laugh at
the way we live inside

wayward

On my kitchen table there’s a vase
full of silverware, of cutlery,
and flowers sit crumpled and glowing in
the drawer next to my sink

imprisoned

Routine is something that
enlightens, I think,
but there’s an element to spontaneity that
makes us free
and let’s our minds assume the neutral position,
something which is
grand and
well-deserved and
liberating
