and roll, the earth alive
tumbling in waves, an ocean of green and brown,
mud spilling up around exposed roots,
worms writhing, branches falling, birds screaming, we run for cover —
and roll, the earth awake
the sun blotted out by the black of the sky,
and who knows where we are going, who knows where we’ve come —
we’ll roar,
heads thrown back eyes shut tight, teeth bared —
roar and rumble
rumble and roll
the earth beneath our feet moving, shaking, unsteady,
the only way we know it.

she whispers, pointing out the yellow against the blue
as giggles, shrieks, the soft crescendos and dips of conversation
set the backdrop of something special,
a moment of cheeks pressed against the glass,
eyes wide
little fingers splayed
palms against water-not-water,
as bubbles and fins and manta rays spin
softly, quickly, a moment of suspension,
a moment,
a dance,
in the space of a breath.

“olive you,” she giggles, tapping his nose.
he just blinks at her, no slow smile creeping across his face.
“listen.” swallows. “i think we need to talk.”
she just blinks at him, her eyes dark, closed, careful,
olive forgotten.

you sift the sand crabs through your fingers,
a sideways-shuffling gift for me

i blink at you in the saltwater sunlight
and i’m not sure who i see

you with a crab dancing between your fingertips,
your hand held out to me.

it was sticky and sweet and it stuck to her fingertips. he gave her a lopsided half-smile and reached out to dot her nose with it, gooey and golden and autumn-smelling, and she squealed, leaning away, batting at his hands.

it was sticky and sweet and didn’t wash out easily, but it was love and they both knew it.

“it’s a y, not an i”
your lips form a tight line but i laugh
and trace the “i” darker in the sand
with the sunburned heel of my right foot.

i don’t care how it’s spelled
i don’t care how i feel.
saltwater waves will swallow you whole, every consonant,
one misprinted “i” buried in sand-memory and time.

he clickclickclicks
and she watches the back of his head,
those absentminded fingers pulling
through his hair;

she taps her own out on the keyboard
leveling up
attempting to be the kind of girl
he’ll love online and off.

white, the trees are white, the ground is white, the sky is white and the white goes on.

i open my hand and there you are
written in wrinkles
and spaces between fingers
and lines that fold and unfold and go on.

you are the secret in my smile
you, on the tip of my tongue

you are a song and i’m learning the words,
you on the horizon and you in the sun,
a dot of gold
a grain of sand

and this is the crescendo these are the chords;
i open my palms to the evening gold, a promise.
