it’s blue and i clutch it tightly,
wondering whether i should flip it upside down
or rightside up,
whether the bright gold letters are a source of pride
or an apology.
both, i decide,
and the line shuffles forward.
i do not understand the languages on the sign
or the vowels in the air that surrounds me,
and i cannot forget that i do not belong here
but i am as much a part of here,
right now,
as the people laughing and smiling around me.
the line shuffles forward,
and so i step in.

he blinks,
thumbs through the pages,
a slight widening of the eyes.

do you like it?
she hovers over his shoulder,
watches and fidgets and worries.

his eyes trace the words,
back and forth in quick, sharp lines
and the corner of his mouth twitches.

do you like it?

of course i do.

he says,
and i squint
a little too long, a little too late
“why didn’t you just stay?”

he says,
and i look away
a little too late, a little too long
keep me apart from you, please
i don’t need you in my head or heart
confusing my sentiments at two am

he says,
and i scoff
to you? to me?
a little too long, a little too late
“why didn’t you just stay?”

his mind ripples like the water and i can’t see to the bottom;
i’m not sure he can either.
he is closed and he is cautious and he talks,
oh he says everything i want to hear,
and maybe he means it
but his mind is still just the river and i can’t see to the bottom.
i want to hold him close but i know
he will slip through my fingers
and i don’t even know where to begin.

(in, out, breathe)
she does.
closes her eyes and
stretches up on the tips of her toes
as if she can rise to green-pointed tips of the earth.
he smiles as he laces her fingers between his
closes his eyes and
breathes in the musky nighttime forest cologne
that colors the air around them.
(in, out, breathe)
they are between pines and lost to the world
belonging only to each other
and the scent of new earth.
