monk

The monk sat in the rectory, wondering where he’d gone wrong. His socks were mismatched and mud caked the soles of his slippers. The wind whistled through the rectory.

broadcast

A place where people let go of their feelings and just talk, or sometimes they are speaking on the news and broadcasting what is happening around the world. However, broadcast can be split up into two words and just mean you have a “broad cast.” Then what? Does that make it something completely different?

walls

High walls around around the houses. Electric fences, armed security. Fear and suspicion. Life in the suburbs of Africa. Looking up I watch the clouds fly across the heavens, birds swooping joyfully. Wish I was up there.

epic

Not quite, but nearly the epic storm he thought it would be as the huge Atlantic swell swamped across the deck. He sucked in the spray laden air and tacked hard into the swell. Sure he finished last but it was one hell of a race.

wagon

He had been off the ‘wagon’ for just two days, but it got to him, the thirst, the dribble of moisture down the side of the cold beer. He slunk into the dusky bar and slaked his thirst. Oh well, two days is a record, tomorrow I will try again.

festival

Fireworks ended the festival, although even this could not conceal the dark brooding violence seething in the slum.

hoop

Circus, place of animal cruelty. Forcing bored and tame animals to jump through a hoop of hell, flaming. The trainer, stupid in his arrogance thinks he is so clever but in reality a fool. The animals know better.

cabin

The cabin of the plane pitched and shook as the pilot prepared to land, swooping through the violent African thunderstorm until slipping and sliding across the hail strewn runway it safely came to a stop.

They made plans for a suicide pact. He had the courage to follow through, she did not and chose life. Somehow I think he understands as he loved her more than life itself.

hinge

My decision to stay, help, will hinge on what? It is just that the poverty, sickness, crime and heaving masses, scare and overwhelm me here in Africa. However I am trapped, hedged in, I have to help, even one. There are so many starfish to pick up.

fences

Fences, across the African bush, dividing up the land. The animals still migrate as they have done for eons, only to be blocked, caught, impaled on the fences of death. Their instinct to live causing them death. I weep.

runway

The small plane banked sharply to land on the dusty African runway. Children ran alongside waving and cheering. The village waited in anticipation. The doctor had arrived. The outside world seemed somehow closer.

accordion

I remember your slim Greek hands holding the accordion, fingers gently depressing the keys and the the gentle swaying of your body as you played the haunting melody.
‘Watch me fly, bet you cannot catch me.’ You said. You smelled of Kouros.

bench

It took a long hike up the gorge cut deep into the Twelve Apostles the range running along the coast behind Table Mountain, but I did it and sweat soaked I reached the bench cut by nature into the solid rock, I sat and stared at the perfect sunset over the sparkling Atlantic ocean. Content.

crisp

It was over, the African storm. I sucked the clean, clear air into my lungs, rain washed. Thunder still rippled and slid through koppies and licks of lightening flicked through the heavens. Then silence and the sun broke through dark clouds. Quiet touched the land again.

conceal

You can do that, conceal your true intentions but against that backdrop of your conceit I still love you, painfully so, in your smile I see a glimmer of hope but even that is a lie. I adore you but that wound is too deep to heal. Time to move on!

sparkling

The setting sun set over a sparkling Atlantic ocean. Seagulls danced and swooped in the blood red evening sky. I turned to you in excitement, only to find you had your back to me,blind to the beauty around you… I turned and walked away.

I laughed at him, he blinked as I shoved him backwards onto the sticky beach sand. ‘That was quite savage of you,’ he said. ‘Its, you,’ I said.’You bring out the beast in me.’

lilies

They were her favourites but I always hated them, lillies they remind me of death. Funeral parlours, long stemmed in tall vases filled with pale water.
