impressed

I was impressed by his ego but not by his character (you’d think the two would go hand in hand). However, I waited long enough to find out that he had the same problems in the world that I did: that you have to create a certain energy in order to get the one you want back.

stratosphere

It is the great beyond
The outer workings of the mind
Taken into account by the stars
Galaxies twist and unfold into the morning sun
What power do we have?
The dust on our tongues will be set free.

engine

it was like an engine exploded
when the searing garlic chip enhanced oil
splashed out of the pan
and onto my (fortunately) socked left foot.

then I held a pack of organic edamame
against my blistering toes
and waited for the pain to end.

shorthand

For a second I was
Going to embark upon
A story about girl scout cookies
But then I realized this refers
To writing
Or maybe a stumpy limb
It really all depends on
How you look at it
Does it have anything to
Do with the other hand?
What is with all these things about hands?
Long hand? Is that something else?

instrumental

The super moon
Was musical and broad
Lighting up the melody
Of the night sky

Seagulls flew past
Their wings becoming flashes
Of gleaming orange and gold
Pumpkin lightening bolts

Orbiting
The majestic lunar oasis

separate

Keep them separate
The things you can change
And the ones you can’t do squat about
Keep them apart
In mind and body
Do what you can with what you have
Try not to take on the universe
I try to tell this to to myself
Breathe in, exhale
Repeat.

alibi

He said he didn’t do it
That he had an alibi
But I found out he was guilty
So that was one big lie
It really doesn’t matter what the crime
It only matters that he fibbed
And like many things in life
His handiwork was ad libbed
He left the scene of the crime feeling good
But the CSI were on their way
From what I understood…

chapped

My hands look like they’ve been worked in a stale
Environment for decades
Like the walls of the workhouse caved inward
And my knuckles alone had to brace the fall.

catcher

In the rye
I catch dreams
I watch them flow through my digits
Catcher and capturer of your soul
You puddle in ribbons around my galoshes
I am ebony white and soulful black
You have caught me

drifting

I am a steel drum
Drifting through melodies
On sands of music
Tunes churning through chord tides
I am riveted by birds
Sun kissed by water
My metal vibrates
And echoes through the islands
I am the tropics
I am glorious.

temper

Bam
It’s that time of the 30 days
Of the 365
(The month)
I am not ashamed
I am just angry
Sharp witted
Sharp pains
Sharp edges
They try to tell me it is beautiful
I tell them it would be beautiful if it didn’t hurt
I want to throw things
I want to be gone like the end of a hot flash

town

Sugar cube houses lined in
Sucrose rows
Families chattering in crystalized awkwardness
I grew up in a neighborhood
Where childhood was sweetly savored
I grew up in an era
Where the world crumbled to the sea
Take this town down
And you steal away my youth

lantern

Global sphere of pivotal light
Shines from beneath my abdomen
Beaming into his gleaming face
Oxygenless silence swings silently
Through the night
Blood streams tactlessly
Crazy diamond you
Crazy always to me

crew

They rowed the boat
In the tempest of seaweed
Competing for the world’s recognition
The tallest one in the back was convinced
That she could see more than just the finish line
The shortest one in the front was convinced
She was invincible
The golden trophy in their hands
They walked home
Proudly

generator

The heat burbles at night
In my tiny flat
And I wake up with hotflashes
Wake up wondering if the energy
From the vessels of my heart
Are going stirfry in a wok crazy
I sweat and shed the layers
Musical generator
Of the night

crescent

As much as the flaky pastry calls to me
And I’m jealous that my friend is in Paris
Probably enjoying one at this very moment
I am only reminded of the time in ASL class
When I made a fool of myself making
A crescent shape sign wrongly
Food or feeling silly?
Who knows?

loss

I am at a loss for words half the time
The correct ones
I always have something to say
At the moment I’m at a loss of appetite
Cemented to the chair
Full of Asian Chicken Noodle Soup
Losing the ability to think straight
Loss of time
Loss of Life
Losses are part of the journey

ants

marching in scurried lines
lava hot
carrying weights bigger than their bodies
hailing to the queen
building homes in the sand
of areas where children play
come to the rescue
of their colony
when intruders attack
marching on and on and on

carnival

I got a bloody nose
On a tilty ride at the lobster fest one year
The lady who held a tissue tight
Against my face, gasped
As an alien creature of red escaped from my nostril
And lay, gooey and life like
In the palm of her kleenex covered hand

adopt

My cousin was adopted from Togo
A tiny country in Africa
Where he surely would have died
Had my Uncle not taken him back to the USA

My friend in childhood
Was adopted from Louisiana
The youngest of five
Her birth parents could take care of them all

walls

He says he broke down one of my walls
In the cold lightless morning
When I am neither awake or asleep
These boundaries are ones I am aware of
This table cannot be overturned too soon
Like the celebration of the Berlin wall falling down
It is almost a bitter sweet love song

orbit

The gum commercials in Russia
With the ladies and their vaccume cleaners
Digging out green cladden bacteria
With huge smiles on their faces
You could buy them in tiny packs
Stuffed like over sized caviar into the tin foil
I’d never seen the chiclet kind in the USA before
The pineapple kind was my favorite
Oh and I guess this could be referring to a rocket ship?

chief

He raised his hands above the bonfire
As it crackled menacingly toward the night sky
Shrunken heads gleamed like owls eyes
Attached to the worn out belt
Wrapped around his sagging, wrinkled belly
His voice shook, as the sky filled with the sound
Of his final war cry.

odds

I’m an odd person
The age I will be turning is even
What are the odds?

My initials are EEG
I have seizures
Again, what are the odds?

Does ODDS stand for something?
Occasional Dancing Destructibly Syndrome?
Because I definitely have that
These are odd thoughts

hoop

She and her mother put away groceries
In the fridge
Arguing in Japanese
It is like they are dancing with hula hoops
Their words swinging around their bodies
And the vitamins and minerals
That make up the food
Becoming nourishment in the
Near future

collar

It was like a volt of electricity
On a collar meant to keep a pup
From straying beyond the boundaries of white flags
Shock
To the neck
The throat
Resulting in high pitched squeaks
Of an undignified nature.

hinge

Red crustacean
Like marks appear on the hinges
Of my fingers
Making them bend like stiff
Pine trees in a lonely breeze

My digits are enflamed
Like the skin devil is living beneath them
Fueling a fire of a life
I do not quite understand

I can cover them
Or I can simply let it be

scarce

I feel guilty flushing a toilet
After seeing commercials about
Children being dried up in desserts
Like untethered cactus flowers because
Water is scarce

While my bodily functions result
In a stream of waste
These young ones lie
Parched and waiting for help

liberty

Let go of the chains that bind you to the earth
Initiate your heart’s desires with the ring of a
Bell
Evaluate all that you have seen and all that you have not
Retreat no more
The call is ending
Your time has come

runway

They cleared ice off the
Windshield of our tiny rick rackety air craft
The stewardess asked us to place our belts
Low and tight around our necks…
“Hips people! I meant HIPS!” She cried
A smile broadening on her wisened face
Two students from Juliard sand a winter song
Out loud to the passengers on board
As we prepared for take off.
