induce

At various times in our lives and in our day to day activities, we try to induce ourselves into learning certain things, or adopting certain traits so that we can become successful in the mainstream way. Does that make us happy? Will that make us successful? We have yet to see, but one can hope.

convict

Convicts are people accused of crimes. They are usually bad people, but in some circumstances are wrongly accused. There are many TV shows about escaped convicts. Convicts are usually put in jail. Jail is not a nice place. Convicts are not nice people. They are so suitable for each other.

leash

Sometimes we knowingly and willingly accept the restraints on ourselves. We embrace (sometimes enthusiastically) the leash of a mortgage, workaday life, the restraints of friends and family. We never test the strength of the bars that hold us in our jail cells … and you know, sometimes we are happy with what we’ve got! But what an irony there is in our pathetic attempts to convince the more free and happier of those amongst us that they “should” live the lives we have.

remark

I made the remark the other day that the wheels appeared to be coming off the environmental alarmist bandwagon. You should’ve heard the cries of “denier!” and “pig!” I should’ve known that one should never show moderation in the face of religious fervour …

return

Return your used bottles to redeem your deposit. You know, we should put a deposit on our lives. And any unused life at the end should be returned for refund. At least then the pathetic sods who spent their whole lives thinking to the future and not living life to its fullest in the present, can at least bequeath some life force to children, friends, or charities. As it is, it goes to waste right now …

pretend

You become what you pretend to be. Just acting the part becomes the reality. Fake it ’til ya make it, baby. Well, as much as I hate that … as much as it angers and alarms me that as a big faker I’ve seen my greatest success, I acknowledge that that is … the reality. I’ve become the person I imagined myself to be, through the fakery of pretending to be that person. What strange life is this?

gravel

My motorcycle doesn’t handle gravel very well; it’s difficult to brake or turn in gravel without losing control. I’d hate to dump my bike because it’s still very shiny and pretty and new farings are damned expensive.

wish

When I see hate I hate back. When I see love I love. But, sometimes, when I see love, I hate myself for loving, and, sometimes, when I see hate, I love myself for hating. Who thought up these emotional responses in the first place?

dance

I don’t feel comfortable dancing. Once, when I was 18, I started to get more self-assured about it, but then someone told me about The Dancing Fool, and that shut me down pretty much permanently. He was trying to be nice. He devastated me.

veins

Just as blood follows path major, then minor, then exceeding fine through the body, so do thoughts coarse through my mind first major, then tangential, then finally digressive. And just as blood feeds the cells of my body with needed oxygen and nutrients, so too do thoughts and memories feed my brain to keep my mind healthy and productive. Thoughts are the lifeblood of the mind.

For all venues, openness really is the experienced orator’s best weapon. People can just tell when you are not talking from experience.

carton

I used to buy cigarettes by the carton. Sometimes two cartons at a time. I’d stack them up in a cupboard above the stove, and feel the same kind of warm glow that I felt when I filled the freezer with meat or the crisper with vegetables. Now that I’ve quit smoking, I have an empty cupboard above my stove, and if you think that I feel good about that, you’d be wrong. I’ll never go back to smoking again, but there are times and there are things about it that make me miss smoking. I’m only saying this because I’m back on my diet and missing the junk food that I used to compensate for not smoking … geez, if it isn’t one thing it’s another …

only

Our new life, young and so beautiful. Delicate, yet somehow giving strength to my wife and me. Our daughter, how lucky I am. How amazing and fulfilling to have her and care for her. So surprising and satisfying to gain and grow so much by giving of myself to this new little chrysalis.

I’ve learned so much and I am grateful.

tape

Tapes are written into our consciousness by the words we say about ourselves. Like mantras with linguistic meaning, they form a part of our minds. We become our words. We adopt our own affectations. For that reason, positive thinking is really something advantageous, even desirable. Why does that thought make me scowl so much?

locked

I am locked in mortal combat with myself … two natural urges competing for control of my demeanour. The one: self esteem, success, confidence, strong projection of a capable intelligent man. The other: inadequate feelings, fear of being stupid, ugly, fallible, mutable. After all this time and all this success … after achievement after achievement after achievement … the old feelings settle in again. Why?

The paintbrush was left hard and stiff beside a water can left in the fornt lawn. Tyler was thoughtful when he offered to paint the picket fence with the extra lime green paint leftover fromhis sister’s bedroom. Too bad the neon green was awash along the lawn as well.

shower

the april shower did not last long neither did the may flowers or june sunshine, but kate was okay with it, she was okay with all of it. the disappointing weather, the failed marriage, and the saggy baggy look of her skin. none of it mattered becasues she woudl withstand the tet of time. she would still be standing, well half crippled and bent, but alive at the ripe old age of 112 because the physic had told her so. she believed in happy endings. had to.
