She took a deep breath and held it for a moment, eyes closed, chest expanded, before she breathed out slowly. She opened her eyes and peered around the crowded room, searching to see if her ex had left; she had. With another quick breath, she ducked from her hiding spot and headed out into the party.

they stand side-by-side to compare. one’s tall, one’s short. one’s mean, one’s kind. one’s angry, one’s happy. pessimist, optimist. but, id says, we are opposites not mismatched. what would be mismatched then, id returns.

open a book. read a word. read a sentence. read a paragraph. read a page. trace the lines across the page. memorize the facts. but don’t think. don’t apply this knowledge. spit it back out on paper for that grade and then forget it. you won’t need it anyway. we’ll make sure of that.

she flicked through the dictionary, trying to find the word to best suit her mood. she wasn’t sure which it would be, or even if she could find one. she was always at a loss these days. well, she thought, tipping her head to the side as she skimmed through the t-words, it could be worse.

so this one time i was wandering through a maze of bushes when i accidentally kicked a lemon. a lemon! what i really needed was an orange, but i hadn’t run in to one yet. that stupid turtle was playing games with me i just know it. a butterfly drifts past, but i hadn’t taken the time to get a net. oh well.

oily slick it slides across her skin, in her nose, in her mouth, filling her lungs, her guts, winding through her, drowning her. She claws at nothing, at herself, at it. she clings to hope that something will reach her, free her. she wants to wipe her face, her eyes, cough up the thick tar that pulls her down, fills her

this one chance of all the world to happen at the right time in the right moment, right when you need it to. don’t take it for granted. just take it. run with it. go as fast as you can. take advantage of it. don’t forget the time that brought you here and gave you this gift. it won’t happen again.

he dresses up every day. suite, waistcoat, tie, belt, shoes to match. he stands before the mirror and slicks back his hair, practices his smile, practices his spiel. he’ll own the client one day, he’s sure

lay it out in lines up on lines, draw the pile of silk, the furred edge of glory, the simple lines of clean design, a shot of color to accent, the shine of gold to stun

no one word can claim meaning for all things. such is the nature of the lost. we are found in that empty space between a multitude of words, worn down to nothing by the echoing wind. feed the heart with songs

she’s a local, staying close to home, afraid to wander away. he follows her, pacing behind like the mutt he is, walking at her heels, tongue lolling. it’s hot this time of year, but she’ll go to the community pool and he can lay in the shade of the changing rooms and pant while she and the other kids run around dripping.

chuck, throw, toss, get it over the line, past the goal, don’t let it miss, you’ll fail- fall- so far down the rabbit hole no one will be able to rescue you. do you see? do you? it’s one last chance to make the world owe you instead of the other way around. is it ever the other way around?

she sat quietly at the back of the restaurant waiting for it to empty out before she approached him. it wouldn’t be easy, getting him to agree, but she had to take this chance. had to run this risk. if she wanted information on her family, she had go to the one guy she had hoped she never would. she just hoped he’d forgive her

we are mighty as the wind, rushing through the night, calling out wild war calls, breaking the peace as we spurn the calm and give birth to thundering joy. feel us reach out to you and lure you into the wildness that we hold with our hands and give away careless as we always are

nothing made him feel as free as flying across the pavement did. the wind rushed by him, people jumped out of his way, the world blurred, sped by. he was alone, on his own, one step away from a rough tumble, but nothing felt so good, so clean, so pure

she drowns in it, the rush, the flood, the pure outpouring. people can’t stop what they feel though they may try, and she knows. she knows when they start and when they stop and when they can’t stop. it burrows down into her and she can feel it all. she can feel everyone but herself. she is empty, a receptacle, nothing in nothing

break apart and trade places; can’t you see this isn’t what i want. somewhere along the line we became two separate desires and that’s not changed. we should switch places, trade dreams, find another way to function in between these worlds we’ve created around ourselves. nothing will be the same or wander apart. we’ll only have these strange, dark places, these strange dark dream

he leans over the student’s desk and tries not to let his frustration get the better of him. they’re so small and filled with a sense of superiority. they know *nothing* he seethes. he wants to drown them in the things they don’t know; in the grief they haven’t experienced; in the losses they haven’t faced

dance, jump, leap, curl, bend, fall, but whatever you don’t do, is to dream for yourself. you are here only for those who give you direction and you should only bend to their whims. your own are to be hidden away and ignored. do you understand? will you obey?

sleep now child before the sun rises. rest your head and let the darkness draw you in. feel the calm rise over you. there’s nothing to fear. the darkness will recede. death will not come today. you will rise once again, whole and hale. feel the touch of peace wind through your limbs, ease your mind, calm your fears

she slid the knife across her palm and dipped her fingers into the blood that pooled there. the book sat open before her. the ink on the pages had faded, but she should still make out enough to draw the warding symbol across the glass of the window. as she closed off the circle, the angel landed outside the window and stared at her, dark wings spread wide in threat

he bends, twists, curls himself around, but it’s too much. his body breaks under the strain, cries out, destroys itself and he falls, burns, dies. he lays, unheard, uncared-for, alone until he drifts away from himself, lost to himself, nothing but the sound of himself
