It’s abundantly clear that you are not the man I thought you were.
So who the hell are you, really?
I can’t tell you that.
You are going to have to.
I love you.
No… no, I don’t think you do.

Left behind by the race, the short, wheezing boys pulled to a halt looking around themselves, red-faced.

“Quick,” one panted. “There’s no teachers looking. Let’s duck into the bushes and have a quick cigarette. We can catch them on the way back.”

She clasped her hands together and prayed, “Dear gods of my mother and ancestors deliver this man to me.”

Behind her, the crowd swayed, baying for blood.

The distress beacon blinked, forlorn, unnoticed. A hundred meters away were bloodstains. The trail in the mud suggested something had been dragged to the river. A deflated life-preserver was hung from a thorn bush as if its owner had just gone swimming. The surface of the water was undisturbed.
‘Let’s get out of here,’ said Buran.
Something moved in the rocks to one side, shadows uncoiling.
‘It’s too late for that,’ I said, flicking my rifle’s safety-catch off.

Sundried tomatoes: mangled strips of blood red flesh, texture like leather, oozing oil.

Sons and daughters of Earth, today we fight for our children, our future and for freedom.

“Yeah, like that was worthwhile,” she said, looking down at the notepaper I had spent all day writing her a poem on. “Don’t you have anything better to do?”

We had been fasting for fifteen days when the angels came. Armando said they were here to guide us. But they didn’t seem like angels to me, they seemed like devils. And I wasn’t sure where they were leading us, but it didn’t look anything like heaven.

The clamp slowed the bleeding, but it was already too late. She looked up at me, already deep in blood-loss shock and her tears streaked the camouflage on her face. ‘Don’t forget me.’ She said.

I am a wealthy and successful man, and you are what? A thief? A common criminal?

You stand in front of me, unconcerned by the bat I am threatening you with.

I have every right to kill you. What makes you think you can just come in here and take things that I worked for, Things that I spent years struggling with my competitors for. Things that celebrate my triumph and the fact that I am a winner?

You don’t answer.

We struggle. Despite my armament you beat me. It seems easy for you. You don’t even seem to be trying.

“What do you want?” I ask, from the floor looking up at you.

You don’t answer.

“Just take whatever things you want and get out. The police will be on their way.”

“I’m not here for your things,” you say. “I’m here for you.”

She cut the peppers lengthways into precise three millimeter wide strips. The knife was sharp and slipped through the flesh of the pepper without resistance. She placed each individual severed strip on the plate noting the mathematical relationship between them. She completed the final incision and looked up at the clock. The correct amount of time had passed. In the nursery, the meat was waiting. It was time to combine it with the vegetables. She placed the knife of the tabletop, picked up the tenderising hammer and stepped towards the doorway.

She was captivating. A beauty. Classic curves. Almond eyes.

And the way she laughed would have broken your heart if it wasn’t so busy mending it.

People of Britain, now is the time to rally!

Think of your country, think of your family, think of your children. This is not the time to worry about petty concerns. We did not ask for this fight, but we must come together to defeat this menace of inadequate profits.

Prepare your chequebooks! Apply for an extra credit card! Take that payday loan! It’s what your parents would have wanted. They worked to make this country what it is today, they took their meagre salaries and willingly returned them to the bosses. Without their purchases corporate profits would have stagnated! And now is the time for your sacrifice!

When you look back on this time, make sure you can say, “Yes I did my part.” As the stock market index breaks new barriers and Chief Executives feel able to invest once more in third homes in the Azores, you will be able to take pride in knowing you are responsible for their good fortune.

Shoppers, to your trolleys!

Polar ice, black ice, thin ice.

Ice in our hearts as we scan the horizon and push on through the snow to who knows what doom.

She stapled my shirt to the desk. That was when I knew she loved me.

“I think it’s ok to be irreverent.”
“That doesn’t make any sense?”
“Why not?”
“If you’re not relevant then you’re nothing.”

There are rules. Some of them are written down. You probably know those ones.

But the rules you really have to know are the ones that are unwritten.

These are the real rules, the ones that are held secret in your lover’s heart.

Stealth bombers over Pyongyang. The last man out of Riyadh. Lost in the sandstorms in the empty quarter. The firestorm in Berlin. All gone. All lost. And still here.

Her silhouette on the monitor was backlit by the flames.

“Send everything you’ve got – the whole world’s on fire,” she shouted.

“There’s nothing left,” I whispered into the microphone.

“Nothing at all?”

The flames crackled.

“My god, we’ll all… I better go.” She turned the video feed off, but I could here her panting as she ran.

I covered the microphone so she wouldn’t hear my sobbing.

No games, gameplaying or gamers. No Pick Up artists. No one-night stands. No hookups. No booty calls. No casual sex… that’s not the kind of relationship I’m looking for.

Just me, my three deserving children and your credit card… that’s the kind of relationship I’m looking for.

You can watch.

Angel Delight, is there anything better?

A proper trifle has none of that disgusting custard rubbish, just proper stuff – chocolate sponge, strawberry flavoured jelly, strawberry Angel Delight and all covered on whipped cream.

And a trifle has sweets on top. Everyone knows that.

Creative Industry Networking Group it said on the flyers.

It should have said flouncy prima-donna showing off group. Let’s stand in the corner and express our hatred of life through the form of modern dance group. I have a blog and I like to rant group. I just finished a BA in fine art and now I think the world owes me a living group. I’d really like to sell you my accountancy skills group. I met someone famous once and now I’d like to be famous just like them group. Did someone say free food group. I have an illegal download of photoshop group. I know which end of a pencil not to put in my ear group.

In the end it would have been more honest to call it I am fundamentally unemployable group.

But less about me.

Wilful negligence, they called it.

Murder I said. But no one listened.

It’s murder when you decide to kill someone and then do so, isn’t it? Not negligence, wilful or otherwise. You leave a bare electrical cable lying in the corridor you know the victim walks through every day. You know the roof of the corridor leaks. You know the victim is short-sighted. You pull the fuse from the lighting circuit by mistake and leave the cable live and close to the rapidly growing puddle on the floor.

What did you think would happen?

Wilful negligence. Disregard for the life and safety of others. Bad boy. Naughty boy. Don’t do it again.

You probably would have got away with it if it wasn’t for me.

And the punishment should fit the crime.

Joy was a very strange teddy bear. Joy by name and joyous by nature, her owner said. She had one ear missing, but that didn’t stop her smiling. Someone had scribbled on her paw in biro, but that didn’t stop her smiling either.

Joy was her name and joy she was going to be, even if it killed her.

There’s a kind of arthritis that overtakes you as you realise that you are never going to reach the goals you set yourself so many years ago. Your dreams are just that, dreams. Your joints start to creak as they realise. You spent too long on distractions. The face in the mirror cracks. You never got that bit of luck. Or you just weren’t good enough. There’s a twinge in your lower back. And the book remains unsold.

There’s a feeling you get when you’re waiting.

Like maybe you’re being strung along again. Like maybe this one will like you. Like maybe she won’t be looking for something you don’t have, never claimed to have, aren’t even sure what having would involve. Like maybe, somehow, despite all the evidence, there really is someone for everyone.

Like maybe this time things will be different.

1. The welfare of the people is the state’s highest goal.

2. As such, the welfare of the people is guaranteed by the state.

3. In persuence of this goal, the state will not tolerate the welfare of the people being infringed by neer-do-wells.

4. Hence, all neer-do-wells should report to central processing for welfare reeducation.

5. Those neer-do-wells who do not report for reeducation should note clause three of the state’s guarantee to the people. This clause will be enforced.

I was punished. And rightly so. It wasn’t nice, what I’d done. It wasn’t proper. I was a cold heartless, evil bastard who got what he deserved.

At least, that’s what the papers said.

So I’m sitting in the cafe eating my bagel and this girl walks in and I’m like ‘Whoa’. And she’s like ‘who, me’? and I’m like ‘yeah, you.’ And she’s like ‘you serious?’ And I’m like ‘I have money.’ And she’s like ‘Oh well in that case.’

I was destined to love you,
You were destined to die.
I was destined to hurt you,
You were destined to cry.

Don’t struggle against the bleeding,
Don’t cry out against the flame,
There’s a power in conceding,
It’s the nature of the game.
