One of those words that’s usually followed by another. But then again, it is an adjective! How can it just sit there by itself? Cliches, typecast, buzzwords, they all make us think the same. But can you think of the word I was thinking of?
Yes? No? Does school turn us all into marionettes, thinking alike, speaking alike?
It could. Rhetorical questions need to stop now. Don’t you think?

Maybe we’re all our own gods, our own followers. Make space in your mind to be followed to see to be observed, to be seen. There’s no one out here like anyone else, so maybe our beliefs come from within should be directed within.

Beware of what they tell you.
Because than it’ll all become tiramisu.
Which is gross.
Yum. Hot chocolate.
Beware of what turns up on your thighs.

I took his leathery palm in my hand and began to read. I read the years of hard work spent on tilling the soil. I read of ropes burning his skin and he pulled the water up from the well. I read the hours he spent holding his baby girl, caressing her cheek.
It was the most beautiful thing I have ever read.

He looked at his grandmother’s weathered old face with sad eyes. He could see the horror she had faced, the poverty she had endured, in those soft lines decorating her face. He could see her lips, cracked from years of wind storms, with no words to say. But her eyes, he thought, her eyes looked sparkling new

He grasped the rope with all his might, pulling with what little strength he had left. The sinews scratched into his palm, aggravating his wounds as he pulled. But he had no strength left. His grip loosened, he slid, and let go to fall into the abyss below him.

And so they carried themselves, off and away, to a distant place no one knew of.
No one cared.
That’s why they left in the first place.
Did you believe it? No, of course not. Why would we be writing about them if no one cared?

Far away, what can you learn?
What other facts can your brain rightly earn?
Go far, dear, travel around
It will teach you far more than what’s on the ground.

One stair at a time. Slowly. Huffing and puffing, Jared finally had gotten to the top. He could feel the rolls of fat on his back sticking together, and his lungs felt as they were about to collapse; he didn’t care. He made it.

Surrounded, everywhere. You can’t go anywhere, there’s a wall trapping you there, alone. A wall of thoughts and misconceptions, a wall that does not accept you.

It was taking over his life. It was becoming a dominant thought , always on his mind , always present. never gone.

He felt happy , happier than he had felt before. He thought that everything was going the way it was supposed to. That everything was just right, but he had no idea that someone , somebody was waiting for him outside of his house , somebody who would tell him a secret , one that could change his life.

Before the dawn of civilization, what happened? What happened before humans roamed the earth? What happened?
I wonder if it was peaceful. Before humans constructed time and language to identify “before.”

Despite all my efforts, despite all my hard word, I have failed.
No, that is not true. I have not failed, nor have I lost.
I simply tried something new. Suck on that.

Can’t. Breathe. Can’t Breathe.
Help me, help me!
Something’s strangling me, something’s holding me back.
I can’t go on like this, I can’t go on.
Just let me out of here.
Let me out and let me breathe.

Clever, oneword.com. Clever. Of course you’d choose this word on this day, 9/11. Of course. Is it in memory of all those who lost their lives on this day? I don’t know. I don’t know why we should never forget. Don’t forget those who have died, but there is no use holding on to anger and sorrow.

Bound to the force of humanity, bound to the strings that control the universe. Bound eternally, no escape. There is no way out of this control, this madness, this apocalyptic hell-hole that consumes our lives. There is no way out.
You must try to find one anyway.

Relax. Take seat in this chair. Lean back. Feel the masseuse’s hands run over face, rubbing cool moisture everywhere. Relax. Don’t worry. Take a sip of this lemonade. Relax while we take away everything that’s important to you.

I want to be able to do that one day. You know, flex my muscles, feel nothing but a hard mass of strength under my skin. Be lean, flexible. One day, I will. Soon.

“I don’t know. I just don’t know whether I should go or not.”
“Any why wouldn’t you? Don’t you love me, don’t you want to be with me?” He leaned in closer, breathing the words into her ear.
No, she thought. No, I don’t love you.

Breathe in, breathe out. Focus. Sustain your energy. Feel the air circulate throughout your body. Focus. Sustain energy.
What does that mean, anyway? Aren’t human being in a constant state of sustaining energy? As long as they’re living, that is.

It’s a miracle! No it isn’t fuckhead. It’s science. Science let it happen. Science has rules, regulations, laws, theories that explain everything. There are exceptions to every rule. Dick.
No, no no. Why are you so pessimistic? It’s a miracle. Let it be a miracle. Let it be a miracle.

She ran her hands along the edge of the curtain. Soft, velvety green. So beautiful, she thought. If only the world were the same.
“So, what about it? Are you coming with us?”
She looked at him. Her mind told her no.

“Oh my darlings, come here.” she said, holding her arms out. She waited, waited patiently for her grandchildren to run into them. It was only until the cat jumped onto her lap that she realized her grandchildren weren’t even there.

That’s all I need. A hand reaching down from above to pull me up to where I can see. A low branch on a tree, to help me climb, climb, climb, up to the top, so I can see. I can’t see without it. I can’t see.

A step backwards. That’s all it is. I’m dwelling on the past, dwelling on the past, dwelling on the past. Repeating what has already been said.
How could I do this? How could I let them know?
I wish I could erase, erase, erase. Erase it all, until my soul is clear, blank as a sheet of white paper.

She fiddled with her earring look at the floor. “Well, um mom? you know, I was wonder if…”
“If what? Out with it! I have things to do!”
“..Oh, well, then, um, nevermind…” She left the room slowly, still looking at the floor.

I’ve been bitten by surprise.
Two weeks. It wasn’t supposed to come for another two weeks. And this morning, as I saw the signs, I told myself it wasn’t true. It can’t be true.

She blazed through the test, bubbling answer after answer, not bothering to doubt herself, not bothering to double check. A, B, D, A, C, A, B, all the way to the bottom of the page. Done. With one swift movement she picked up her paper and swept up her things, heading for the teacher. As she handed him her finished test, she smirked. Hmph. First one done.
