I’m becoming hard of hearing. All the swarming helicopters, I think it is, but even more so when they’re taking off. So close to my ears. My fingers fist into my trousers, gripping tight, resisting with great strength the urge to press over my ears, tips of fingers digging into the tight curls. My knees feel weak, collapsing is a definite possibility. But the sounds grow fainter with the passing time. I’m becoming hard of hearing.

Your temper – it’s usually level, it’s typically fine. You remain calm, logic your way out of situations instead of exploding. I explode. I smash teapots and yell until my throat’s raw. You’re a nice difference from all that. It’s one of many, many reasons I keep you around.

He didn’t even bother to dismiss himself, just simply turned away and walked out the door, his steps quick and brisk, leaving me with two warm mugs in hand, feeling rather miffed, rather despondent. The prat was always doing this, walking away in the middle of a conversation without a word about where he was going, but this time was different. He wasn’t doing it out of disinterest or simply his complete lack of social graces – he was doing it because he was scared, because how DARE we even approach the possibility of him having actual feelings.

Brunch is a common occurrence in our flat. I sleep late, far into morning, and he, while he rarely sleeps at all, won’t eat unless I did. He has no particular interest in it. So when I rise to the sun already high in the sky, the first thing I always do is clamber into the kitchen and pull out the coffee and toast.

Techies – build crew, lighting crew, costume crew, paint crew. One crew after another. I work my ass off, at least once in a while. I try to tell myself that I care, that I love the work that we do in our department, but I try to get out of working whenever I can. I stand around talking at every opportunity, while the rest of the crew is working, sweating, creating something beautiful. I should try more. I may be the lazy, freeloading son, but I am still part of the family.

It’s like a carnival, acid is. All the colours, spinning around and around and up and down, the ever-changing sights, the crazy tricks that wow the crowd, make you laugh, the thrilling rides that spin you, throw you, move you so fast, make you scream with joy until tears pour down your face, until you don’t know what you’re seeing or feeling but you know, you just know, that it’s bloody brilliant.

Mazes, Labyrinths, David Bowie. An incredible thing that was almost my childhood, but decided itself to wait until I was a teenager, and what a change it was from everybody else. I’ll always love it, even if the one who introduced it to me so late in my life isn’t anyone I love anymore. She won’t make this memory bitter.

I’m going to adopt a dog, and you’re going to adopt a new attitude. Stop fussing around, and put away that upper lip. I’m getting one whether you like it or not – and I think, in time, you will find that you actually do like it, so just hush now, why don’t you.

Butterflies. They always like to land on noses, don’t they? Or at least, they always appear to in movies. I’ve encountered thousands of butterflies, mostly just in passing but a few scarce times when visiting gardens especially for them. However, I have absolutely never had one land on my nose. Clearly this needs to be fixed.

Toes. Now where the bloody hell did that come from, “toes.” Sacred toes. Now that’s slightly off, I think, but let’s roll with it. Worshipping his toes, perhaps, catching only mere glimpses of them every few months or so. A small treat, something to look forward to in the summer months when shoes and socks are shed. Perhaps in the morning, when he’s wrapped up in a robe or a sheet, wandering barefoot until he reaches the tea kettle and scurries back into his room.

Function? What function do I serve? I’m a human being, you prat! You can’t just treat people like this, like we’re lower than you, like we’re just machines that have a one particular function. We do what we do. Christ.

Scarce. What can I say of the word? Hollow, empty, barren, but yet somehow I can still find it in my head to romanticize it. Imagine, one describing something as scarce but in a loving, adoring manner. Ridiculous. I love it.

You’ve never heard of the Statue of Liberty? Really? What planet are you from? I can accept the planets and the greek letters, but the Statue of Liberty? It’s huge! Hard to miss! You never looked up at it, wondered what the hell it was? You’re crazy.
