A tear rolls down my cheek as I stare out to where you used to park. I glance around, and my eyes fall heavily on your seat. Then they wander to where you used to cook us breakfast, every god damned morning. How did this happen?

As soon as I heard it, my heart dropped. That sound was the end of my social life. As soon as I walked out of that door, Jeremy was going to announce to the whole school what happened. He told me as much. Twenty minutes ago, he texted me, so I would agonize over it. I’ll be lucky if I don’t catch a criminal record, all brought on by the sound of that damn dismissal bell.

It didn’t go un-noticed, as he previously thought. That one text was enough to show that she not only recognized, but appreciated this gesture he made for her. That one text was enough to fill him with hope that one day he could make her his wife. All it said was, “You are too much.”

Her eyes contained all my favorite parts of the night sky when my family used to take me camping. The darkness, with the assurance of stars to light your way. Uncertainty, but only in the most comfortable way.

A god damned circus. That’s all this family amounts to any more. Each gathering has been more chaotic than the last for the past four years. And each time I keep telling myself next time has to be better. This year, it was no longer fun. It turned into one of those circuses you had been looking forward to, but there was a stampede before curtain call. Casualties and all.

I remember those late August nights. The temperature was perfect, and we often went for late bike rides. He would cart me around town on his handlebars, and it was on top of those handlebars when I realized I love your father.

As I stared over the rolling foothills, I couldn’t help being reminded of your face. This time of day always has that affect on me. The golden hue of the twilight gives me the same feeling your smile used to.
