break from reality
takes me to a different place

I built myself a bridge,
and got half way over it
before the thought of
jumping entered my mind…

The light shines into my eyes and I squint to see the road ahead. The steering wheel gripped between my clammy palms stays steady, and the car remains centered in its lane. Suddenly, and this is the last thing I will remember, it gets brighter.

You have no idea how much the little things you did to me impact me every day. You’ll never get to see either, because you’re gone … you can’t lay eyes on me and I still wonder why I ever laid eyes on you…

You lost me when you turned your back.
You lost me when you lost yourself.
You lost me when you found yourself in someone else.

The smell of cinnamon filled the kitchen, she wiped the flour onto her overalls, and jumped down from the chair.
“Grandma,” she said, tugging at the leg of her Grandmother’s pants.
“how long until we take them out of the oven?”
Her eyes sparkled at the thought of biting into one of her family’s famous cinnamon buns…
It’s days like this she needs to remember…

You don’t have to be my rock,
or the balance to my tipping scale.
You don’t have to steady me,
or keep me safe from everything.

A declaration of feelings on one end,
and a reciprocation on the other.
Now I’m a different kind of breathless,
and I don’t mind if it’s reckless.

I was your pawn,
the one you set on the board
only to trick the other.
You play a lot of games hunny,
but this time you lost.
The pawn and the piece
we formed a team.
Now the board is out playing field,
and you’re the new pawn.

I have a longing, deep inside my mind.
I long for something I shouldn’t;
I want to know what it would be like.
Would it be dark and lonely?
Or bright and inviting?
Do angels exists,
or would it be a few too many pills,
and that’s it?
I know you shouldn’t wish for it,
but no one told my heart,
I think I’ve fallen in love
with the uncertainty…

I was startled,
caught off guard.
I was silent,
I was surprised,
I felt insecure,
I stopped trying.
came the crying.
I was startled,
caught off guard.
I felt nothing,
in that moment.

The end of the bride,
coated in sheer ice.
Enough to make one fall;
yet I still stand.
The path through the woods,
blocked by a web of branches;
each ready to entangle feet,
yet still I stand.

Everything always centered around it-
that very first hit.
People saw distress and suffering,
every time she tried to smile.
They couldn’t let her forget,
not even after the walls crumbled.
They always saw her in the center;
of the pile of debris.
Her face blue and purple,
but a smile still shone through;
until the night she begged again,

Hot breath against necks,
Bare legs tangled together.
An intimate kiss,
between two hearts.
Free falling, deeper into love.
“Sweetheart,” she breathes…

The chalkboard stood in front of her,
absolutely cluttered with a series of complex formulas;
none of which she knew the meaning of.
The only thing she did know,
was that the world would not erase mankind,
she would not allow it…
“X squared..” she mumbled, fiddling with the chalk in her hands..
“to the power of 15-”
“Amber? What in the hell are you doing..” an all to familiar discouragement said,
“you can’t stop this.”

I was almost like they wanted me to take an eraser to all of my feelings.
To start a new page in that journal,
to write new stories on new lines;
to forget you.
And so, I picked up a pen instead,
something none of their erasers could abolish..
and I wrote the number five on the wall of my heart
in permanent ink.

Her hands hung over the edge of the tub,
her body finding new strength…
she makes a decision,
that isn’t really conscious-
to pull her body from the cold, wet floor.
The people knocking on the door,
they would miss her..
one more sigh…

Her young fingers curled around the rope, as she trudged on the small sleigh followed behind her. Though empty upon first glance, the sled was full; overflowing even. She pulled behind her now, what had brought about hours of fun for three before her. The earth was covered with a blanket of light snow, and her hands were red in colour. The wind nipped at her cheeks but she didn’t feel the cold. Her heart was warm enough to heat her whole body…

Her fingers brushing over the keys,
her soul slipping into a melody.
The music soothing her ears,
an innate feeling of peace;
resurrected by the frequency
of an unfamiliar tune.
Happily she hummed along,
to a song she’d never hear again.

He stood, frozen, in the doorway. His eyes scanned back and forth, unable to make out anything familiar. His room looked as if it had been completely turned upside down. His jaw dropped when he noticed that one thing still sat in the very same place; the thing he had initially suspected led to the ransack… but why?

It’s the longest road;
not all the bricks are yellow.
Some are cracked and worn,
others teeter under your feet.
The ones that are shattered,
they can’t hold you…
You read every sign,
a distance that never shrinks.
You’ve chosen the path least traveled by,
and gone astray time after time.
Now dust the dirt off your shoes,
brush the leaves from your hair,
and get back on the path.
Racing against all odds,
the worst weather held inside of you,
cloudy days and rainstorms,
followed by only seconds of sunlight.
Those who reached their destination,
they’ll tell you it’s hard.
You’ll learn to persevere,
and before you it,
love, you’ll be here.

I used to think I was an individual, until society told me to conform. Now I march in the back of the line, with eyes blind to the way I’m mimicking their actions. The world was once a painting with different colours added by each new sets of hands to pick up the brush; everyone adding individuality to a canvas of meshing colours. Now the world is a series of the same painting, tutorials followed to paint them as such. Those canvases painted with the same set of colours, no paints mixed to form any other. I used to think I was an individual, until I painted the same picture as everyone else, through a series of brush movements my mind was hard-wired with; like a slave to conventional society.

Every heart is a bank,
stowing away, in its deepest corners, the most valuable of emotions;
Sealed shut by a lock with an intricate combination on a turning dial.
Every soul is a banker,
deciding to whom those emotions be given;
doled out like cards in a game of poker,
only to hope the account holder isn’t bluffing.

Her head lay on her pillow, which was now saturated in her tears.
She couldn’t believe that when she hugged her mom goodbye this morning, it was her last ever time doing so.
Her pillow acted as a sponge, absorbing all of her grief, though so much was still trapped inside.
The night went on, she shed buckets of tears;
all she could think about was wrapping her arms around her mother…
Her body was rested on the bed and her hair draped over the edge,
a metaphor for herself – draped over the edge…

the rhythm of the music, was like the rhythm of her heart. Her eyes smiled like the curve drawn between her cheeks. She had never felt such internal peace. Her feet tapped along to the beat that drown the entire room in the sound of passion.

An pain seeming to be everlasting,
as she covers the hole in her chest with her palm;
Frantically trying to stop the bleeding.
She sighs, knowing, there’s no longer any point.
She’s dying, and her thief is escaping;
Forgetting the value of what they stole.
Her chest, though empty, feels heavier than usual,
and her mind feels distant…

You have no proof. You cannot prove I’m guilty of stealing it; but I’d do it again.
It pumps so forcefully, with so much courage, so much passion.
I just had to get my hands on it, it is the only antidote for my pain…
I’m sorry if i broke your ribs to get to it but,
don’t you want me to have it?

She continued to remain in silence,
even when the world begged to hear her voice.
She talked only to herself.
Isolated by an experience that stole her vocal ability.
She continued to remain in silence,
even when she screamed.

“I want that one, ” she said, pointing to a red apple that hung from a branch high out of her reach, “That one with vibrant red skin and the little bit out of it…”

This one thing, it makes me toss and turn.
it makes my stomach churn,
in the nighttime it makes me smaller than usual;
in the daylight it makes me fear for my life.
This one thing is something I can’t pinpoint,
so it’s nothing specific…
