The sky was blooming in soft hues. Tones of sincerity, kindness, love.
But it lacked passion.

i like to trade things – lots of things – like smiles for instance – have you ever traded a smile with a baby? so fun! i like to trade hugs too – nothing feels better when you’re tired and discouraged than to trade a hug with someone you love. let’s see – oh the trade center..

On a whim, or a lark, or a spree, or a dream. He wasn’t sure which way to go when the light changed, so he kissed her and imagined the stars.

Carefully she lined the paperbacks on the shelf. When she came across a bent or torn one she set it aside. Carefully she laid out the bent copies, smoothing them as flat as she could. Hefting a heavy encyclopedia, she set it carefully atop the paperbacks to fix the bends. The torn paperbacks were analyzed, and the ones that were unfix-able went into the meticulously sorted recycling. She carefully mended the remaining books and shelved them.

If I just remove the obstacle we can be together. I need to get rid of what’s holding us apart.
I’ve got to get rid of her. It’s always been her that keeps us apart.
If I just get rid of that damn Barbie Raggedy Andy will surely realize we belong together.

Garlic knots. I was sick this week, so sick, and I was trying to eat as much garlic as possible. I’ve heard it’s really good for you, especially when you’re sick. Garlic knots were an additional way for me to consume more garlic, and they’re so delicious. Buttery, garlicky and warm, they’re a great comfort and sick food, though my breath probably didn’t win my any friends.

“UGH. I hate the taste of licorice. I don’t want to drink that!”
“Come on, it doesn’t taste bad!”
“I hate licorice!”
“Try it, the Red Bull will make it taste better.”
“Yea, a gross drink with gross flavored alcohol is going to make a great drink. Nice logic.”
He sighed then. She never did anything fun. Biggest buzz kill alive, he thought. He thought bringing her a drink would loosen her up, but she was too busy harping on the flavor when she hadn’t even tried it!

Smoking was a favorite pastime. Go to a dark bar and smoke broodingly while you listen to bad poets on the stage. It made you artsy and sensitive and mysterious. Sunglasses and black turtlenecks were your wardrobe staples as you smoked your way from room to room.
You don’t smoke anymore. The turtlenecks are gone and your idea of cool sunglasses are glasses with Transitions lenses. You have a wife and two children. A good job. A happy life.
But there’s still a black turtleneck in the back of your closet, and cigarettes deep in a jacket pocket. You pull them out but don’t smoke them. That’s the old you, and you’re not that guy anymore.

Gently tapping, inching the knickknack to it’s rightful spot. No, now another one was out of place. Everything needed to stop moving. Everything needed to still. Her world was organized, regimented, constant. Unchanging, unmoving. Except for these knickknacks that wouldn’t still.

It was done. Fate had caught him in it’s web and swept him to this end. If it hadn’t been for his parents, his fate might have been different. He might not be in jail right now with their blood still on his hands. But fate had also given him his parents hadn’t it?

she sat behind the desk still as death, and just as menacing. She had a run in her hoses and a too tight sweater. Lipstick smeared her teeth and the ruler never left her left hand. She knew how to use it. Knew how to lash out without mercy at the slightest imagined slight. She was paranoid and angry.

I was sat on the roof, looking out into the black dark, it’s always darkest before the dawn. A clear blue haze came over like a blanket being torn away by someone resless to wake.
The stars faded instantly, the roof and I dark against the skyline.
