Before you I could stand.
Before you I could stand to watch Romcoms.
Before you I could stand to watch Romcoms with another body, somebody with your markings and subtleties.
Before you I could stand to watch ducks line up like marines to join marine life.
Before you I could stand to vocalize the word marine if it ever needed to be used like you used me.
Before you I could press my flimsy flip-flops into a crumpled brown paper bag leaf on the ground and breathe in the sound, without it reminding me of your disheveled brown paper bag shirt that I always detested unless you wore it with my favorite jeans.
Before you I understood that people are always in all kinds of transit, and that I should accept that like an “I love you” that came at an imperfect time, lined with sincerity from the sheets that we never washed.
Before you I understood that people are always in all kinds of transit, myself included.
Before you I understood that people are always in all kinds, but now I just crave your kind.
Before you I understood that people existed, but didn’t think that there was a lid to screw onto my jar and now it is closed off to the world.
Before you I understood the things that I thought I knew, but didn’t.
Before you, I understood shit.
Before you, I was just myself.
Before you, it’s not before you anymore, ever.

The feeling of cold in the soul, an absence of light that wraps its icy tentacle around eyelids, suffocating them until they are forced to resign and hang vacancy signs signifying a lack of availability. They are the elderly, flying to some southern Florida-esque state, geese v-ing together to escape the winter winds.
