flare

I have asthma and anxiety flare ups
Both of them come on suddenly
And it’s hard to describe to someone
Who’s never experienced them
Exactly what it is I go through
Some people are reminded of signal flares
Or nostrils flaring when people tell lies
But to me a flare is an unexpected occurance
That happens in my lungs and my mind

insect

The boy that co won the glee project looked like he should have been cast in a broadway production of Avatar. His skeleton was that of a cicada and his eyes were narrow and he had this pensive glare. He was tall and his hair hung down in dreadlocked clumps, but he pulled through.

torch

The show survivor brings me back to the days of my youth when someone would inevitably be booted off the island. The contestants stood in a circle surrounded by tiki torches as theme music resonated around them. I watched, awe struck as they voted who would have to leave and be out of the running for a large sum of money.

vodka

It was in Khabarovsk, Russia that I got my first real dose of the stuff. I was an exchange student and my intake counselor had me drink countess shots over dinner until it tasted like water to my tongue. It was also there in Russia, that I discovered my love of screwdrivers.

glowing

There were fireflies zooming around in the backyard at dusk.
With a radiant glow of an expectant mother, they chirped and flashed
Their lights in hopes that they would find the one they were meant to be with.
These insects have a whole world of their own
With different rules and different colors
And yet we see their lights from far away.

console

My sister watched psycho when she was six years old. When we went to summer camp she refused to take a shower because she was afraid she would get axe murdered. A counselor came and found me in my cabin and begged me to console my sister and make sure that she bathed properly. I was nine and a half years old at the time, but I went and demonstrated that the showers were perfectly safe.

birth

My nephew came and left this world after five days.
His body was pushed, bloody, and unsturdy into the hands of the doctors.
He was kept alive by tubes and bags of donated cells.
The day he died, I found a fungus shaped like buddha in the woods.

waver

Tuition waiver? Someone who waves? A wave crashing on the shore? I’ve never encountered this word before. All I can see are walls of the sea, blue water, friendly faces, pieces of paper…is it a verb or a noun? A subject or a predicate?

heel

It’s a command for a dog, along with sit, lie down, roll over, pound it, fetch, don’t beg, etc. How the shoe and the command for the dog got the same word I don’t know. Maybe because when a dog heels it stays at your heel?

dinosaur

We watched Jurrasic park in a home theater when I was a young kid. The jaws and the ferocious music were so in your face that I actually believed I was transported back to the age of dinosaurs. I was afraid of the ink spitter, and the velociraptors but there was something endearing about the triceritops. All that’s left is the bones and the birds.

fluorescent

It reminds me of art galleries or college classrooms. Fluorescent lightbulbs strung crudely to lamp shades. Christmas bulbs. Things that aren’t really connected but that somehow come together to make light. It also reminds me of flowers.

chorus

I always had to stand on the back riser- one of the tallest people in my class. It was probably just as well because I didn’t feel confident as a singer, and wanted to be as far from the microphone as humanly possible. If I were to be in a chorus again someday, I would want to be singing with the cast of RENT on Broadway.

intersection

Halfway down the intersection, there was a piece of roadkill.
An animal strung out to dry.
Its fur was matted with blood and bits of rubber.
Where had this creature come from?
And what made it decide to step out boldly onto those yellow lines?

whiskey

All I can think is of this article I just read about college student’s low performance due to alcohol. That should have been a no brainer. Getting wasted=getting lower grades. I myself am not much of a partyer, and can’t see the appeal of blacking out.

success

To me success and Karma have a lot in common. Theres a comparison of a stone being thrown in water and all the riplets- for every action that occurs there are millions of negative and positive occurrances following. Everything comes back. So success can start out as a failure…perhaps.

galaxy

I remember the days of Star wars. My brothers claimed I sounded like an Ewok when I was little whereas my dad said I sounded more like the squawking chimpanzee on National Encarta. I always wonder what would happen if they did indeed venture out to a galaxy far far away and what that might mean to the rest of us.

structured

I chose my college because I didn’t like the way high school was structured. I pictured college as a tower of different flavor of perfectly baked cookies compared to high school which felt like the remains of a box of stale graham crackers. I wanted to do things in a different way without GPA’s or valedictorians.

gym

I worked out at the gym when I was in 5th grade. I had a personal trainer. I think the the hope was that I would get rid of the puppy fat that had turned to something more. My mom said it was because it would be fun. I think she was ashamed of me. Ten years old and twenty pounds over weight for someone my age.

heels

I can’t wear high heels- my feet are too big and two wide. Monstrous.
The bases of my feet are cracked and sometimes dry so I cover them with lemon scented lotion. Sometimes my feet seem far away, after all the eyes that look down at them are about five feet and ten and half inches off the ground- why should there be high heels to boost them any higher?

mango

My friend Ursula is cute and tiny and has a soft lilting voice. She is sweet and ripe as nectar, and I can hear her dancing among the trees in and among dreams. I came across a recipe for caramelized upside down mango cake and it had coconut milk and red chiles in it. She is the epitome of richness and spice.

outlet

My brother is a very energetic human being.
He is electric, and always on fire.
The drums are the perfect outlet for him.
He gets to create a vibe, a beat, a tone, and he gets applauded for it.
My brother is a puma.
He is fast and swift.
He is a wild thing.

sage

I learned how to play scarborough fair on an electric keyboard when I was nine or ten. It reminded me of the smells of the farmers market and of travel and somehow of my mothers shampoo. I wanted to lean down into the garden of notes and deeply inhale. But then the last key was hit.

chocolate

Valentines day. Neither my mom nor I remembered to give my stepdad a card or flowers or anything like that. I did however make chocolate dipped cookies and chip cookies and distributed them to neighbors. One of which was old and widowed and needed company. She told me of her girlhood in a nearby town.

needle

I love donating blood. The only part that irks me is when they slice your finger with that tiny piece of glass. When they insert the needle into my vein I feel relief. It’s like I’m knitting a river of life that can be given to someone else.

coward

We are fools in this generation
We refuse to sing out because we are afraid
Like the cowardly lion in the Wizard of Oz
We decide to claim its because we don’t have heart
Voyage onward lads
Go into that dark forrest and do not shun
Those who stand beside you

fragrance

Roses and tulips dance among
The scents swirling in this life long garden
Resplendent with the fragrance of childhood
Lost are the aphids and sounds of yesterday
Replaced with petals
Color, and beauty
We dance and hold out our arms

I’m allergic to scents and smells. The smell of perfume makes me dizzy. I love the scents of chocolate and freshly ground coffee- the natural, the pure. Don’t bottle anything up for me, don’t spray it in my face when I go to buy tacky lingerie. I won’t inhale.

pills

They fall from the bottle- white, round, psychotic. Or anti psychotic I should say. I’ve been taking these things since I was born. Since before I knew what they were even meant for. They don’t even have tylenol in Russia so why do I know these things.
