You spent days fixing up that banjo, days when I wasn’t allowed to see you. But those were the ones you were happiest. Strumming away playing bluegrassy folk music in your basement. Whiskey and pipe tobacco, but you’ve never been to the South.

With roots deep. Some days I hate working at the Credit Union, but that’s grassroots. I grew up too country for all of this. Maybe that’s why I crave the city. There’s a beat instead of strumming, and banjos just make me sad.

Press down. Wake up again with your teeth mashed into the sides of your cheeks. You cannot breathe. It’s better than last night, gagged mouth and clamps. You bite for freedom. Your jaw clenches, unclenches and you move because you can.

He cast the line into the pale green sea.
“What about Marley,” I asked, watching the old man.
“It’s too late for her Canson. We lost her long ago. Her heart and soul belonged to Rooney, and when he left, she left with him.”
The sun was beginning to rise, sending shimmering diamonds onto the water.
“I miss her,” I told him quietly, my voice trailing off.
“Nothing we can do now boy. The best we can do is giver her all our love. Act like we believe she is still here, still the same, even though she’s not.”

It was there that I saw her first,
hair cropped short,
around her knees.
in a way
that kept the outside
her soul contained.
A tattered suitcase
sat by her feet,
with a lifetime
In was in that moment,
waiting for a train
that would take me away
that I wanted to

May I bloom for you???
Or am I too bright for you,
Don’t ask me why I do these things
I respond by instinct
Opening to the sun
