We sat together on the bench watching tugs and fishing boats in the channel. He ate the fries from lunch. I smoked a cigarette. We never said a word, just watched the ocean.

On the back of my Colts’ ticket is a coupon for $100 off a set of four tires at Tire Barn. Really useful to have eight of those for my dilapidated Volkswagen.

She said I looked like a penguin dressing up to go out on the town. I commented that there were no towns in Antarctica, just research stations. She said that was just like me to make a joke out of her statement. I said that was a statement? She said more like a criticism. I said hmmm.

The light danced in my eyes. I saw her image flicker and fracture like a kaleidoscope of color. I put my arms out so she would lean herself into me. She disappeared and I wept.

Dark and dirty, the Edison Coffeehouse on Washington Street kept in business due to the plethora of crack they sold out the kitchen door. You would enter, order a dirty latte from the barista, he would take your name, and then you’d proceed out into the alley to pick up your drugs.

The old woman moved slowly along the flower bed, a rubber pad beneath her knees, digging deep, narrow trenches into which she placed four tulip bulbs each.

There are a lot of old lighters in the box: red, green, BIC, the kind that require lighter fluid and a flint. I had an American flag lighter that I would bring out during anti-war demonstrations. And another that would light no matter the weather. Of course, I smoked back then. The landfill will claim all of these. Except the American flag one. That’s a memento.

When I woke up I could hear an electronic tone repeating itself. I could not see anything in the dime light. I was lying down with a cover over my body and I felt something wrapped around my arm. All this was not reassuring.

My hand trembled as I tried to pry open the pill bottle. It was hard enough trying to outwit a child, but out-dueling a prescription bottle cap was even more difficult. Finally I grabbed a chef’s knife from the kitchen and chopped the bottle in two. Now, why was I taking these pills?

Brad got the nomination for Congress by besting his opponents. He got pictures of Nelson shacking up with another man’s wife. Teresa was seeing Brenda in the teacher’s lounge at Northwood high School. The biggest problem was William. Brad had to hire an assassin.

Dust danced in the sunlight. A small snip of paper tangoed across the window. The window glistened, brilliant rays streaking across the room. My breath lost its way.

It was an automatic response. She swung at me and I swung back. I didn’t think when I did it but, boy, do I have a lot of time to think now. Like 90 days in county. Damn.

Taking piano lessons as a youth was definitely not my idea. My mother made my sisters and I take them. She could sit down at a piano and play anything she heard by ear. Well, just the melody. She used a standard accompaniment for the other hand. Me, I can’t get my two hands to do two separate things at the same time. So, no International piano career for me.

Blister. I limped to the park bench. The girl who I had lapped a few minutes ago had a smirk on her fae as she passed me. Thinks I am tired. Or a quitter.

He was banging on the door with his fist, swearing at me to open up, let him in, face the music. I cowered. He had installed extra locks on the door because I was scared of the burglars, home invaders, punks I had read about in the paper and seen on Fox News. I did not realize they would be my husband.

We lined up, tallest to shortest. Jim was always in front, Becky in back. No one could ever imagin that the two of them would get start dating, much less get married. But they always were jealous of the other, one in front, the other in back.

She appeared wraith-like, thin and wispy. At first I thought she was behind me and I was seeing her in the glass. But there was nothing behind me. When I looked again she began to dissolve and that is when I fainted.

We wanted many ways to modify the software. Installing the latest module from the developer allowed us to make the software “aware.” Unfortunately, we did not check the URL quite closely enough. The software deinstalled us.

Along the edge of the lawn there is a crisp white stone path. In some places the stone is crushed so fine the anything walking on it leaves prints. Raccoons, squirrels, wolves. My neighbor swears he has seen wolves in his yard and now I have proof.

“Wait until I cut out this pattern and then we’ll talk.”
“But the pattern is what I want to talk about.”
“It can wait until I am done.”
“But this pattern is not the right one.”
“It’s as good as any other.”
“But this pattern changes my life such that I…”
“There. I am done. What did you want? Uh, where dd you go?”

Persistently the aura around the medium flickered off and on. She was in contact; she was not. Watching her to determine if this was real or if it was deception was futile.

She kept her distance like I was an enormous, ugly spider. Her face contorted into a red mask of disgust. Her hands clenched and unclenched. Spittle ran from her mouth. I should not have told her I worked for the White House.

The contraption was gray and red. It rose higher than the trees that surrounded it. What civilization raised it I do not know, but their collapse must have been wrapped in steel and rust.

I wished she had stayed longer. I never get to talk to her. She wanders in and then wanders out, like a ghost of a dream. All those things I wanted to say to her are still jelling in my mind. After all these years it is difficult to remember that cancer took her away and she can never come back.

This isn’t the most prestigious award I have ever received. It is decent though. The Best Use of a Semicolon in Flash Fiction. Wish I could remember what I wrote.

It was an old iPod. It contained a mixture of 60’s rock and roll and new age from the 80’s. I don’t know who was left it on the window ledge in the gym. I glanced around to see if anyone was watching when I pocketed it. I can’t explain my fascination with it but I listen to it every time I work out.

I don’t know why she volunteered to be a figure model, standing naked in front of strangers as they tried to capture her essence in a few dark lines. Maybe she wanted to be admired. Maybe she wanted to discover who she was. Maybe she was teaching me a lesson.

Substantially the sound resonates off my chest and careens through the corridor. I listen for its return only to be met with resistance and regret. A whisper is all I hear.

Sometime a little bit of leverage is all you need. I’ll get that job… unless the boss man really wants those photos published.
I’ll get what i deserve.
A little leverage is all i need.
