The soda bubbles over the metal can, but he doesn’t see the foam as much as he sees her eyes. Even as they kept a steady distance. It was the first meeting in a thousand reincarnations and his drink was dead between them.

My thoughts are scattered.

Can you tell where the birds go when they smell the freedom of the endless sky downward \. The bees are humming together like a hive mind that creates the corpses of the their brethren. I cnan call across the maze of people to the one that flies beside me in the havoc that blinds the world before it falls to smoke and ash and polluting round the sun that burns and burns and smokes out our thoughts through the bushes trees and mist.

He was always seeking. Seeking far below the hate. His ego was so blinding that he could barely see his sanity.

God was there, but he was always mouthing his words.

He could never clearly hear.

And thus he is sinking.

This was a battle to the death. She could see it in sight. The best thing about having two brothers is that it prepared you for battle. A battle that she intended to win.
“You’ll never get the last bite of cheerios.” He cackled maliciously.
She narrowed her clover green eyes.
“We’ll see, bitch.”

Tip Tap. Scritch Scratch. All across the paper, colors mixing and mingling. Dust flies through the air. You hold back a sneeze. A rainbow decorates your fingertips, finding its way in clouds to settle on your slacks. Your hair is a mix between red and green. A deep breath to clean away the dust, a careful brush to smooth out the edges. A slow, accomplished smile.

All done.

Dipped in chocolate
Or coated in caramel
a treat to crunch on
While you watch the Oscars.

The air lifts the paper airplane across the room. You smile at it from the top of the stairs. Your mother smiles as well as she folds the laundry.

“See? It flew that time.”

The curl of a smile. The beat of a heart.

“Come with me. Think of the things we could do together.”

Sad eyes.

The earth orbits the sun. This is a common fact of life. A bit of info we keep in the back of our minds as we look up at the stars at night.

Each star has its own planets. Thousands of stars, each with their own solar system.

Gazing up at the black of the night sky, one might say they feel small, insignificant. Like they are staring into the abyss and it is staring back, cruel and cold and empty.

That we are the only sentient life alive in the universe.

I look up and I see community, connection, possibility.I can’t give in to the same cynical frame of mind. I have to believe that when I shout out into the vacuum of space that, somewhere far away, there is an echo answering back.

A secret I hold close to my heart.
A dwindling bushel flickers in the night.
I found him on the corner of love and loss,
Curling smoke to heaven
And smile twisting with it.
An unanswered question on my lips.
A knowing twinkle in his eyes.

A belief most sacred.

I will never understand his devotion to his job. The hours upon hours he puts in at the office. The dark circles under his eyes or the almost fanatical obsession he has with tracking down a culprit.

But he is my boss, my leader, my role model. My chief.

And I will follow him to the ends of the earth.

“You’re doing that thing again.”

The dark haired man looked up. “What?”

The shorter man groaned. “You with your cheek bones and your collar turned up, trying to look all mysterious.”

The taller man sniffed. “What? I do not!”

The blonde haired man smiled as he opened his car door. “Oh, yes you do.”

The other man frowned, but slightly adjusted his collar as he opened his own door.

“Do not…”

Chaos buzzing everywhere.
Honey drips here and there.
To the thousand folded eyes.
There is a secret, sweet surprise.

He had plans. Plans to leave this backwater town and start fresh. Out there. In the big city. With it’s bustling streets that never stopped moving and its shining skyscrapers. There, anything was possible.

The edge of the thought hangs long and dangerously close. I feel as though I could merely step and I am walking on air. It whispers and winds through my mind, whispering like the serpent to Eve.

“Freedom”, it says,”freedom from attachments. No ties to people that only weigh you down. No logic that only serves to constrict your mind. Nothing. Just nothing.”

And my hand shakes as I unhinge the last bolt of sanity.

Fences spread far and wide
Across this barren plain.
And into all their precious heads
Does seep the pouring rain.
No coat or jacket or cover still
can protect them from the spill.

I ran, blending into the crowd like a fish hides in seaweed from a shark. The police couldn’t catch me, not like this. I knew that if I wanted to survive, I needed to make myself scarce. It was the only way I was going to prove my innocence.

Below where the demons howl.

Below where the sinners cry in pain.

There I duly wept my piece.

To solely die in shame.

And she bellowed from the highest mountain. As she watched it echo and break through barrier, reverberating through the crisp, chill air and shaking the snow at it’s core. She could feel her bones shiver with the bass and her heart rattle in its cage.

The sweet notes and spindling notes of the accordion wind through their ears. The pasta topped with the tomato sauce tastes of Italy on their tongues, They glance at each other over the candlelit table and smile with flecks of red on their teeth.

Crunch of snow beneath your parka. People going to and fro. You snuggle to get warm.
The bench creaks beneath your weight as he comes to sit beside you and you snuggle in the snow.

Crisp, cold winds with the crisp crunch of leaves beneath black boots.

Autumn sounds. A
