My love of aquatic mammals such as dolphins, beluga whales, seals, and sea lions were the reason why I wanted to become a aquarist from a very young age.

“I only have enough bus fare to get to the next town, but it’s a few stops short of where I need to be. Any chance you could give me a lift?”

Serena peered curiously at the young Brit—Andy, he’d identified himself as—that stood on the sidewalk near her vehicle, tan duffel bag swung over his shoulder. Desperation was set in his deep blue eyes, and he looked like he hadn’t slept in a week. Her heart went out to him, really, but she wasn’t in the habit of picking up strangers. No matter how handsome they were. “Which town are you going to, again? Frederick?”

“No, Germantown.” He shifted his bag to his other shoulder, not knowing that Serena was quietly impressed. She’d purposefully said the wrong name in order to see if he was telling the truth. “I know it’s a lot to ask, but–”

“Hop in. I’ll pop the trunk.” She smiled after he heaved a huge sigh of relief at her response. “Thank you so much, ma’am. I’m so grateful.”

Once Andy had placed his belongings in the back and got into the passenger side, she extended a hand towards him. “First order of business, don’t call me ‘ma’am’, it makes me feel like an old lady. It’s Serena.”

He laughed for the first time as he gave her a handshake, and Serena decided she liked the way Andy’s smile lightened up his whole face. “Noted. It’s nice to meet you, Serena.”

“Tractor beams aren’t real. You know that, right? I need you to know that.”

The woman simply giggled at the man’s statement, as if blissfully unaware he thought she was positively insane.

“There are several things you should keep in mind if you’re looking to buy this property, Ms. Carter.” Arthur slid a file folder across the desk, and Elyse picked it up. “There’s some structural damage it sustained during heavy rainstorms last year. Some foundational issues as well. But all in all, if you’re hoping that this could be your forever home—well, with a little bit of work, it can be.”

Mother stood at the top of the steps, her stern gaze boring down on me like a hawk circling it’s prey. “Pack your bags, Annabelle. It’s time for you to go.”

I waited a beat, swallowing the lump in my throat before trying to speak. “I assure you, Mother, you won’t hear from me again after today.”

“See that I don’t.” And with that, she turned on her heel and went back upstairs, stepping inside her bedroom and slamming the door behind her.

I awoke to the ringing of an alarm that I hadn’t set the night before. Part of me wondered if I was still dreaming; as my eyes slowly fluttered open, I saw a figure cloaked in black, standing at the foot of my bed.

“What an awful host he’s been,” Cameron remarked as David yet again whizzed past she and Jasper without even sparing a glance in their direction. She sipped on her glass of white wine, eyes roaming about the room. “If we weren’t contractually obligated to be here, I’d say forget about it.”

Jasper laughed and snapped another photo from his Nikon. “You and me both, sis.”

He smiled in her direction, white teeth dazzling. He looked like a movie star auditioning for his next role. Anna lifted her hand to wave, the enthusiasm of her smile not quite matching his; blind dates were the bane of her existence and she’d been dreading this night for weeks.

Oh, well. Might as well get it over with.

The typewriter dinged and Quinn lifted the paper from the holder and smoothed out any imperfections. Her eyes quickly ran over the text, smiling satisfactorily upon having finally completed her task. Jacob didn’t know what was coming.

“Something’s not adding up,” Mike mumbled as he chewed on the end of the #2 pencil he currently held, staring over the top of the computer that his partner Lennie occupied. “You’re telling me a wealthy tycoon on the verge of a breakthrough that’ll potentially make him a billionaire is capable of a gruesome murder like this? It doesn’t make sense.”

Leanne clutched the phone to her ear, trembling all over. “I’m telling you, I’m being stalked. The same man who bumped into me at Whole Foods today is across the street from my house. And he’s just staring in my direction.”

On the other end of the line, her sister sighed. “Did you ever maybe think that he lives in your neighborhood? It could just be the first time you’re seeing him today!”

Fear rising steadily, Leanne closed the curtains by the window above the kitchen sink, turning her back away from the man outside. “Jodie, let me hang up and call you back. I’m going to call 911.”

I slipped my headphones on and tried to concentrate on my math homework, but it proved futile as my little brother tugged on my sleeve to ask me another question.

“If we can’t prove that he had malice aforethought, we can’t prove he’s our killer. It’s that simple.”

“I can handle this,” Asa spits angrily, pushing his chair away from the table and heading for the front door. Naomi follows, right at his heels, begging for him not to do anything foolish. Her husband simply ignores her, grabbing his jacket from the coat tree and sliping it over his broad shoulders.

“Asa, please.” Naomi tugs his elbow, eyes glistening with unshed tears.

He sees the worry in her eyes and doesn’t take it lightly. But after telling her story, after knowing that some degenerate had laid a hand on her…how could he sit idly by and let it go unpunished? “I’ll be back soon, I promise. Just let me do this.”

Against her better judgement, she let him go.

I didn’t believe in God but if that’s what it took to keep Mark around, then going to church a few times a week wouldn’t hurt. I took my seat on the back pew as usual, watching others file in and a low, almost comforting tune being played on the organ in one corner of the sanctuary.

The people began to worship but I was able to block out the noise. Because at the end of the day, that’s all it was.

A look of discontent settled on Mike’s face before hanging up the phone. He spared a glance at Lennie from across the room, shaking his head. “No dice.”

“Nothing?” Lennie Briscoe, a 30 year vet of the NYPD, threw up a hand in defeat. “I’m starting to believe we’re never gonna catch this guy.”

“The ancient ruins are right this way,” Melanie pointed a little further ahead, beckoning her tourist group to follow. “Now be careful, because there is a slight drop along this rocky pathway.”

The group ambled forward, some holding up cameras and others iPhones, trying to capture the moment. Melanie sighed, biting back the impatient words that were at the tip of her tongue. These people were so engrossed in their technology that they–

A shrill scream pierced the air. A girl Melanie had seen earlier with her parents had taken a misstep and fallen over the edge of the guardrail.

Fear seized her insides as panic reigned.

He points to the sky as the airplane takes a nosedive. “She’s coming in too fast! Everybody run!”

Chaos ensued. Panicked people trampled each other as they tried to run for safety. But it wouldn’t come. Not now, not ever.

The slap stung my cheek. I bit my lip, tried to hold in my tears as I ashamedly looked away from mother. There was a lump in my throat that wouldn’t go away.. “I’m sorry, Mother. I—”

“Silence,” She hissed. “The next time you defy orders, you’ll feel a lot more pain than you are right now.”

The set of knives on the kitchen counter had gone missing. Katie searched high and low for them, but couldn’t seem to locate them. Then it dawned on her: had someone stolen them?

“We’re very sorry for your loss, Mrs. Carter. If there’s anything we can do…”

Sucking in a deep breath, I quietly thanked Father Michael for the kind words. “I’ll let you know. Thank you, Father.”

The priest patted my shoulder before walking away. It was then that Luke entered the church, taking a seat on the pew next to me. “You okay?”

I slipped my hand into his. He responded by squeezing it gently. “I will be, soon.”

“How could I ever repay your kindness?”

“There’s no need, milady. The presence of your company is payment enough.”

“…And, CUT!”

Evan frowned the minute the cameras stopped rolling. This movie was going to be a bomb at the box office.

Dean pressed down on one of the piano keys, causing Amber to look up. “Would you like to hear me play something?

She nodded, a soft smile playing upon her pink lips. “I’d love to.”

The thermometer read 98 degrees—in the shade. Feeling parched, Shay stepped off the front porch and made a beeline for the ice cream truck that was advancing down her street, flailing her arms wildly for the driver to stop.

The miniature golden buddha sat perched atop Adam’s desk, under a small stack of papers. When the wooden surface rattled, it fell and clattered to the rug beneath him.

Ariel swerved to avoid the cone in the middle of the road. Heart racing, she tried to regain control of the steering wheel but was unable to, letting out a terrified scream as her car spun out of control and slammed into a rusted guardrail.

“Turn around.”

Raising his hands above his head, Kyle tried in vain to steady his labored breathing. “Can you just hear me out, please?”

“Shut up. Get on your knees.” Hailey watched as her pathetic excuse of a husband obeyed the order. The woman put the revolver just below his right ear, ensuring that the safety latch was off before pulling the trigger.

It jammed.

There was a war going on in his head. It went beyond right or wrong, and instead ventured into a fierce battle between angels and demons.

She was beautiful.

Enticing, enchanting, mysterious…everything Peter wanted, and apparently needed.

He ran a hand across her thigh, attacking her lips feverishly as the passion between them grew. She gripped the collar of shirt to pull him even closer if that were possible.

Peter had never felt this content, and he never wanted the night to end as they fell backwards onto the bed.

But the second he blinked was the second he woke up, groaning once he looked to the left to see that the large king sized bed he was in was empty—and it probably always would be.

“Do you want some mineral water?” Jake asks, sliding the bottle across the table to his sister.

Francesca frowns and shakes her head. “No thanks. What do minerals even do for you?” The minute the question leaves her mouth she groans inwardly, knowing how much of a nerd her brother was and how he could literally go on for hours about something that excited him.
