Auburn. What a name. It told immeasurable amounts about me: My hair colour, my temperament, my culture. My name, of course. Funny what one word can do.

I looked down. The ground was already far away, the strange vendor shrinking into the distance. It was working. I was growing. It was a new bigining!

“Crap. They’ve hacked the mainframe. I think they’re sending a virus into the network…there it is. All systems down.” Mansfield slapped the keyboard. “How are they doing it? And what do they want?”
Fender laughed. “We’re a secret underground organisation. They want everything.”

It was remarkable. He had a high, sharp nose, big green eyes and thin lips: Somehow, these little things made him stand out from the crowd like a naked man at a funeral. He was just so obviously inhuman.

“You have to invite me in. That’s how it works.”
I was surprised. “O…kay. You can come in.”
He swept me aside, and instantly I regretted my thoughtless decision.

He was the epitome of cool. Cool radiated off him in waves. He was miles too cool for school. And, of course, he was taken. “Oh, look at that slut hanging off his arm! Bet she only wants him for his looks!” said my friend Annie.

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. I frowned, and tried again. Nothing. Anna was looking at me with pity, and a little sadness. “They had to take out your vocal cords. There was no other way. You’ll…never speak again. I’m sorry Ashley!” She broke down in tears.

I couldn’t see very far in the mist, but I could tell one thing: There was no going forward. Something solid rose out of the darkness with each step I took. There was nothing for it. I would have to turn back, and then who knew what would confront me.

I sighed. This was really getting old, this ‘big sister’ thing. I’d taken them to the park, taken them to the movies, taken them to McDonalds, and now I was out of ideas. It wasn’t as if I had any experience in this: What did they expect me to do?

I had never been a musical child. It just didn’t work: my mother had tried to get me interested, sending me to piano and guitar lessons, but I never had that skill. But now, it just clicked.

It was true. I don’t know how I never understood that before. Surely there had been signs, surely…something to indicate that he felt like that… I would never forget the site of his bleeding, limp body lying there, wondering why, why, why, not letting my self see it as real.

The man had promised to visit within a week, but by Friday, Annabelle was beginning to doubt it. He had assured her that yes, he would come and make sure her mother was looked after, no, he would not forget, but Annabelle was beginning to realize that he had scarpered, leaving them stuck.

I couldn’t move. He placed the thin sheet on my skin. It was cool and sent goosebumps rushing up my arm. “Don’t worry.” he said “This won’t hurt a bit, I’m just going to take a sample and then be off.”

I wanted to crush them. End them with a single clench of my giant fist. I have this power now, I thought, why not use it? Why not ruin them, the way they had ruined me, why not take my sweet revenge?
