You counted everything twice to make sure it wouldn’t leave your clenched fists but it slipped through anyway and its too late to retrieve it now. You think the sum of everything you have will synthesize into something you don’t but dear, that’s not the way it works anymore.

She sells shells by the sea in a shack that her father built, then left as soon as the winds changed. She was lonely, she was complete, she died inside a little more each day but continued to sell her shells as if nothing was out of place and the sea contained only enough shells to satisfy the deep aches inside her.

Darkness will ensue if you let it, creeping in and eating away at the edges of your smile. Don’t give it a foothold, don’t open the door! Haven’t you heard that there’s a light rising above the distant fields and it will cleanse your skin, make you whole? Don’t give in, love.

He laughed and ran and hugged me, bowling me over, grinning with his arms wrapped around me and his laugh shimmered and shook in the air like a school of fish startled into beauty.

Alabaster running in circles and having to stop for breath oh my darling haven’t I been here before? Help me know what to do, help me understand the way to glory. It’s getting darker in here and the light shines incessantly in the clear distance.

  • marengo commented on the post, café 6 years, 2 months ago

Let’s go to the corner café and listen for the call that I know will come, streaming through the air like a blue ribbon and deciding our fate. This is not our own, this experience, this reality. We belong in a higher place.

  • marengo commented on the post, burrow 6 years, 2 months ago

I just want to burrow under the blankets and ward off the flying colours, the sharp polygons stabbing through the air, searching for my flesh, oh my darling, don’t let me sink tonight; oh my darling, don’t let me go.

  • marengo commented on the post, covert 6 years, 3 months ago

There happens to be a hiding place amongst the rocks and stones surrounding my house, a hole in the wall and a home for the covert operations of several shrews. What they accomplish there, no one knows, and no one before this has bothered to ask.

  • marengo commented on the post, knock 6 years, 3 months ago

Don’t knock down all those hopes you had long ago with your auburn hair and your eyes aglow, you don’t deserve to go like this. It’s better to run and stumble, skin your knees on the jagged edge of truth so you can get back up and fly.

  • marengo commented on the post, cave 6 years, 4 months ago

Into the cave, crawling on our scraped knees with fingers grasping for anything, a dripping wall of rock, a friend’s palm, a light. We emerge on the other other side as strangers bound by a conquered fear of the darkness.

  • marengo commented on the post, flailing 6 years, 4 months ago

She flailed her arms, back and forth, one after another, as she exclaimed, “Isn’t that the way it goes then, the one thing you want is exactly what you need and what you don’t realize is that you already have it?” Backing off, he replied, “Exactly.”

  • marengo commented on the post, fatigue 6 years, 4 months ago

Don’t crawl about on your hands and knees to pick up those sea green shards of glass you spilled from the jar you keep in your bedroom, the fatigue will get to you, don’t do it babe, you’re not strong enough. Your bones will crack like dry twigs, they’ll shatter and join the brittle pieces on the floor.

  • marengo commented on the post, visitor 6 years, 4 months ago

There was a visitor here, he brought with him a vase of daisies and a small yellow cart. He had the sky in his eyes and the world in his mouth and he stood me all the things I hadn’t known about and he was mine and I was his and that was the story of my visitor, the one who refused to linger for a chat over coffee.

  • marengo commented on the post, destroy 6 years, 5 months ago

I would like to destroy all that is dear to me, all that I am gripping tightly in my marble fists, so that I can become someone newer and vulnerable and paining and crying and open and pure and finally just let go.

  • marengo commented on the post, scatter 6 years, 6 months ago

Scatter your ashes to the clouds, mist the fields with a fine blue smoke. Give up the broken parts of you, disintegrate them. What you’re left with is a shell, one full of anticipation and wonderment. Potential without the scars of ages left behind.

  • marengo commented on the post, game 6 years, 6 months ago

Why are you playing this game, self? Haven’t you done it before and failed? Isn’t it a futile, steel grey matter laced with agony and false dreams? You’ve run in circles long enough to know where this path ends.

  • marengo commented on the post, available 6 years, 6 months ago

Hey you! I’m available for a chat right now, I have two minutes to tell you every detail about my day and my life and why I can’t get that gum off the sole of my shoe. Stranger, you don’t know me but you care, and that gives me uninhibited pleasure.

  • marengo commented on the post, past 6 years, 7 months ago

Sometime in the past. Watermelons and smiling ginger haired freckle faced children. You can’t remember what but you know it was important somehow. You roll over and sigh, the last time.

  • marengo commented on the post, soon 6 years, 7 months ago

Soon we’ll be together in a tent trailer up north where the stars shine almost as bright as the stars in your eyes and blankets are a necessity. Soon it will just me snuggled up in the crook of your elbow, falling asleep in the cool night air.

  • marengo commented on the post, arts 6 years, 7 months ago

Use your arts to capture it. Arts of the eyes, irises, pupils like black holes that pull you in….give it your best shot because tomorrow they’ll be gone like dandelions in the wind over Greece.
