She could feel herself teetering there. Normally it would have terrified her, but for some reason now it was invigorating; knowing that she was on the verge of something new.

As she passed through the hall, she could feel their eyes burning on the back of her skull, their razor sharp whispers sliced her spirit. She should have known they’d favor his account.

She wanted so badly to sit with those girls at lunch, but she couldn’t bring herself to force a smile.

The sorrow settled heavy in her stomach like a brick, and it lingered even longer than the echo of the slamming kitchen door

When I was little I would wear frilly dresses every day (the kind that were good to twirl in, or course), and my mom would top off my long, curly hair with a rather large bow. Classic. :)

Taylor Swift! . . . God, I hate myself right now.

When we were little, my baby sister always had the timeliest stomach aches. Usually about the time we were all supposed to be doing our chores. As the oldest, it was my job to pick up the slack. But once we were finished? They magically melted away…
    Not that I’m bitter.

She sat their quietly until the sun began to sink below the water. As she finally gathered the will to move, a crane swooped down and glided soundlessly onto the water, shattering the glassy surface and sending ripples as far as the eye could see.

Her daughter’s plump pink fingers clung to hers as the waves lapped their toes. The sun’s warming rays were no comparison.

She was unsure of so much, but the one thing she was certain of was this:
The way his hand in hers seemed to open her eyes to a thousand marvelous and wonderful possibilities.
That was all that mattered in the end.

As she reached for the dusty shoebox, a large heavy crate fell squarely on her toe. Once the slew of curses had passed, she reached in and pulled out a worn plaid shirt with missing buttons. She stroked the collar with a sad smile and held it close.

They make awful, AWFUL sounds. So dusty. So temporary. So gross.
Dry erase was a good idea.

Junior year prom seemed like such a HUGE deal. We wanted to go the whole nine yards, so we sprung for a limo. It was fun, but we all realized that it was more about the people than it was about the dresses and fancy cars. The next year? We rolled in in my friends’ […]

Her words still hung in the air as he watched the flower shaped zippers on her neon pink backpack bounce their way down to the bus stop.

“No, dad. I’ll go by myself.”

  • Kaitlyn commented on the post, montage 8 years, 4 months ago

My mom and I have never been terribly close. My strongest memories of her when I was little are of her screaming, pinching my chubby hip telling me I need to lose weight, picking on my grades, etc. But that photo montage she made for my high school graduation open house spoke all the words […]

When he finally walked in the front door, he slid into the booth across from her, not next to her as he usually did. That was her first indication. She bit her lip and flicked her compacted straw wrapper ball off the side of the table.

That bastard stole my heart. I commend him, though, for his commitment to the long haul. 7 whole years to create and upkeep an identity just for me. Such a life-like mask. God knows why he’d want it in the first place, though. It won’t be worth much on the black market.
