• “Oh my god,” I croaked, “another human!”

The figure shook his head. “No. I am just a figment of your imagination. Your spirit guide, or your higher self. Take your pick.”

I had never been a big believer in any of this supernatural mumbo-jumbo, so I assumed that he was lying.

The smile came over his face like a thin copper wire strung across two poles. It was entirely the most frightening leering grin a person can contort his face to make. And I shuddered in his presence just as a spark of electric current conducted down my spine.

    “Want some juice?”

“No thanks. I’m afraid that my dearest Mommy taught me not to accept drinks from strangers.”

“Oh, but I’m not a stranger.”

“I trust you about as much as one.”

It washed down his throat like a tropical cocktail of fruits from a far distant, exotic island. But then it started to burn. “What is this?!” he choked clawing at his scalding throat.

Because she had come to a crossroads. In all of her days, in all of her glory, she never thought it would have come to this; a Spanish speaking maid and a bowl full of colored sponges. “Get out of my house,” she said. “You’re not allowed to eat any more of my watermelons.”

The girl looked at the cereal flakes curiously and asked “What are these things for?”

Her companion gave her an amused glance.

“This is cereal,” the companion said, “it’s food.”

“Oh,” said the girl, “I’m not used to food that’s already dead.”

He had gotten into the habit of checking the back cupboard every day since arriving at Stonebrook. He didn’t know exactly why, but there just seemed something… odd about that cupboard. He fancied himself a cowboy with his big ole belt buckle, his shiny boots and his big pickup truck.
“What do you do?” I asked.
“I’m a network engineer,” he replied.
“Then what’s with the pickup truck?” I asked.
“It’s a big network,” he said without even cracking a smile.

I watched her from the shadows of an exotic bat stall. She was perusing through bottles and bottles of colourful liquids. Some bubbling, some smoking, and all of them seemed to emit a peculiar sparkle. What did she need them for?

I am certain there is a monster under my bed. I saw it with my own eyes. It has bright green eyes, and long blue fur. I think all it wants is a friend.

  • Scarlet commented on the post, missed 8 years, 6 months ago

I think I must have been missing the point, because I could not really understand why we were doing this. To be honest, trekking through dark, unstable caves beneath pyramids that were supposed to be haunted didn’t seem like the greatest use of my time… or the safest.

“I wish we discussed more in class. But then again, maybe not. I’ve listened in on a few of your conversations and it would appear that the intellectual level of this class is… not quite up to my level. No offense, of course.” She rolled her eyes at the obnoxious boy sitting next to her […]
