Smoke wreathed his head and hat alike, and June took a step back, one lower eyelid twitching slightly.

Your knees tremble at every step as you make that long, agonizing journey down the familiar hallway, trying desperately to force yourself to make it to the door, but aware that reaching it will change things in a significant measure.

As much as I knew I needed a tutor – my parents were right – I sat on my bed thinking that I didn’t want to admit it. I didn’t want to acknowledge that I couldn’t do trigonometry on my own, and I chuckled.

“Very funny. By which I mean ‘not funny’,” I found myself saying to the cat. Naturally he would perch himself on the one shelf I couldn’t reach.

I had the hardest time getting the typing box to load, until I realized that I’d neglected to disable the extension that disables comment sections on websites. The very implementations I used to retain my composure led to me losing it. This could speak volumes.

Sure, you loved him. Sure, you actually dared to think about the future for once. But look where that went. Now he’s gone, and you’re alone and old and seriously worried that you’re going to die a virgin and alone.

Just go just go just go – you’re already late! Your lips are still dry with the arid distaste of morning and the unpleasant feeling of consciousness, but you’re just going to have to deal with it until lunch.

I was supposed to read strange books on the mind for the paper due next week. I spent today crying instead. The books are still sitting next to me, unopened and waiting for a different day.

I did that trite thing, where you frame the scene with your thumbs and index fingers, pretending to capture the moment with a photographer’s sense of style. The campfire flickered on.
