    Rule number one – don’t get involved. The world sucks, but there’s not much you can do about it but go on with your own life. One person’s problems are bad enough without carrying around everyone else’s.

    I remember the childhood romps around the den, wrestling with Daddy until Mom called us in for dinner: happy days, before things got serious and life took over.

    The sounds weren’t so easy to ignore, but if she turned up the TV loud enough they faded. Upstairs was where the bad things happened, but she knew better than to go up and try to stop them. Because if she went upstairs, the bad things might get her too.
