This is the worst sound I have ever heard! Why isn’t this in tune? screamed the director. We can’t have our rehearsal with those wretched sounds coming out of that horrible instrument!

It’s the only piano in the place, I whispered, trying to hide behind the curtain.

My sister was calling to me. “Why are there polar bears on my blanket?”
    “Huh?”
    “They’re crawling all over me!”
Clearly this wasn’t going to be a restful night of sleep. “I’ll get Mom.” I bolted out of bed […]

Ereth new that Poppy would find romance with the flowers and trees. He hoped she might find it with him. But his hopes for romance were dashed by a day-dreaming mouse named Rye. Rye? Who names their son Rye?

She was slight, so thin and frail. A spring zephr would feel like a full gale to her, tossing her like dandelion fluff. Where she would sleep tonight was unknown. Dinner? A luxury unavailable to her.

    My desk is a mess
    I must confess.
    It has more debris
    Than leaves on a tree.
    Children add
To the mess that I had.
    Time for spring cleaning!
    (To the dumpster I’m leaning!)

Spring training. I’d waited all year to throw the ball for her. The chop was still floating atop the waves as I launched the ball. Splash! The catcher took her dive into the water and swam toward the falling sphere.

“It will be an old-fashioned pageant! The whole school can have parts!” She bubbled with enthusiasm. “We’ll need music, and decorations, and speakers, and skits. Who wants to do the food? There is so much to […]

The petals of the crocus pushed through toward the sunlight in this phenomenally mild weather. Their cheery pastels were brighter against the brown of last year’s dead grass.

I signed the petition to recall the tyrant who masquerades as governor of the State of Wisconsin. The sooner we are rid of his presence in this state the healthier for everyone. He may be the greatest Democratic […]

Something you believe; something that makes you feel, an idea from yourself, from the world, from others. You can fight wars for it, hug your neighbor for it, live your life for it.

She said,”dismissed” and before the final sound left her throat the class erupted toward the door and into the springtime sun.

My friend has a bad track record of closing restaurants. It seems whenever we discover a wonderful place for brunch, share our find and enjoy a meal there with her, the restaurant closes, burns, or goes belly up. […]

When I was in third grade I loved to swing at recess. It was one of my favorite activities. I would challenge myself to go as high as I could. I think my goal was to make a complete circle over the very high bar […]

  • Mary commented on the post, town 7 years, 2 months ago

The little place I called home referred to itself as a city. I never thought of it that way. It was always a town. A place where neighbors knew each other and looked out for one another. A place to be rid of […]

They were a funny lot. Scruffy, unwashed, smelling of the fish from the bottom of the canoe. But they were mine. My crew, the ones who saved me. This is how it happened.
